same here... shooting RAW will fill my 16gb SD card really fast LOL
i mostly shoot JPEG. the only time i'll shoot RAW is when Im under multiple changing light sources. It'll mess up the white balance so shooting RAW gives me more flexibility to correct in post. |

I shoot in RAW and my SD card is only 8GB-- it's more than enough for every short trip I went. In fact, I control image quantity and save shutter count too.

QUOTE(kkk8787 @ Apr 4 2017, 09:35 PM) Do most of u shoot in raw. I realise shooting in raw in 24MP , 16gb sd card really cannot take too many photos Depends on what u shoot? I guess it is almost necessary to shoot in RAW for landscape because u want all the dynamic range to capture. If shoot sports or panning shot, u can shoot faster in JPG. |

Depends on how you shoot, 16GB can actually last quite many 24MP RAW files over 200 shots. If you like to spam shots any amount of SD card also not enough ......... .ok la maybe 64GB.

QUOTE(gaeria84 @ Apr 4 2017, 09:44 PM) If you don't plan on doing a lot of editing, jpeg is fine already Eh, it's not about "plan on doing edit" but rather RAW file gives you headroom to adjust if the outcome isn't as good as what's expected. Even JPG can edit but once the variables go far off (eg exposure too far off, WB bad) then RAW has the advantage. Even for commercial work - my photos are straight out of camera usable, that doesn't mean I use JPG. I still use RAW so I have room to enhance in a less destructive way. |

First off shoot both raw and jpeg, doesnt matter what subject you shoot, just keep them all (get 32Gb or 64Gb if u out of space). Use some of the free raw editor software and play with the adjustment or photoshop if u want a bit more advance. Then look at youtube and see how some some turn mundane picture into more wow shots.
After that then you can decide whether the extra space on raw is worth. Take note if u using sony kit lens, always enable lens profile in raw editor (if available) cause that lens has issue on the wide end if not corrected. |

having 2x 64gb sdxc cards.. using it for YEARS! storage was never a concern..
shoots both in jpeg and raw depending on occasion. On average a 10 day trip i shoot around 2k images only. also usually i set the size to somewhere around 10mp/12mp.. despite my gear could do 16mp/24mp |

Pro - shoot raw
Enthusiast - raw or jpeg Rule of thumb - always raw , it's not about editing, in case u F up the white balance or exposure at least can save . And picture style can tweak after that too, a good freedom u have for shooting raw |

QUOTE(MooTikPin @ Apr 7 2017, 09:28 PM) Pro - shoot raw That's a misconception. Yes, highly likely most pros will shoot raw for editing purpose. But there are also pros who simply shoot jpegs. Case in point, those that strictly shoot B&W only, sports that require a huge buffer that only jpeg can keep up or those in journal assignment to upload picture fast to the news before anyone else. Enthusiast - raw or jpeg Rule of thumb - always raw , it's not about editing, in case u F up the white balance or exposure at least can save . And picture style can tweak after that too, a good freedom u have for shooting raw Raw offers greater flexibility but not like that much which you can still edit with jpeg. I shoot both raw+jpeg, and find myself editing jpeg more cause the in-body camera already calibrate the colour to my liking from start. Depending on camera model which churn out different color profile, you will probably prefer just to do jpeg edit than raw. Only time I will recommend raw is when you find yourself in very challenging lighting situation which may require excessive tweaking. But like I said before, it boils down to preferences which TS has to discover himself through experimentation than follow blindly what we say. |

Depends.. most of my casual shots I shoot jpeg..
For shots that need special lighting setups, mostly use raw. |

LOL @ the PRO shoot RAW part.
Take note what DaddyO mentioned. For my website purpose I also shoot JPG simply because 1. smaller file size 2. faster process flow Faster process flow because my color profile already set, my studio setup already confirm all output is usable straight off the memory card 98% of the time. Just need to crop, water mark and use. If I use RAW I still have to do all the other adjustments for color, then convert to JPG via LR, then open them to add watermark again. Not to mention in the end all going to resize for web (smaller than 4MP) so what for I take RAW and takes up a lot more space for the same purpose? |

QUOTE(Lego Warfare @ Apr 9 2017, 10:44 PM) ^ this is correct. They know their art, exposure will be always sufficient for print / publication. They do not have the time to transfer all RAW to device, and then convert all to JPG. The amount of time taken is not helpful when your team is waiting for images from you. Competitors news all up already while your side still transferring RAW to computer. |
