Let me humbly explain about the basics of Buddhism.

Basically there are 3 main things a human should do:
1. Do not do bad things
2. Do only good things
3. Purify your mind through meditation.



Here's the 5 precepts(sila) that you should follow (Do not do bad things):
1. Do not kill.
2. Do not steal.
3. Do not commit adultery.
4. Do not lie.
5. Do not consume alcoholic drinks.

Yes, monastic monks will observe 227 precepts.
