You can try the Taipei CityInn Hotel (新驛旅店). I stayed there last dec and I found it quite good!

it depends. but if follow tour, they will bring u to those places to buy things... waste ur time lor..

but if go alone, u can choose wehre to go, how long to spend on that place and etc. more freedom.

I would prefer to go alone...

taipei is easy to get around with, so no need to follow tour also ok one..
