How much does a new fender strat MIM cost generally here in malaysia? Also how can you tell if its really MIM and not some knock off from china etc? Can we trace the originality using the serial number or something like that?

then its a bit hard, you would need to know the year, the model and what not.

also the general history of the guitar and what amp he is giving

if ur lucky, then the serial number can be used...not to see if its original but to see if any fakes have used it before.
fakes obviously arent much bothered about having proper serial numbers, just take 1 and duplicate them on everything.

then u can always open it up and see how the routing quality is etc.
basically just do ur own due diligence and see if its actual proper mim workmanship or some china sweat shop thing.

go test a few fender mim at bentley or swee lee and get the general feel of the quality, especially the fretworks. once you know that, it should be quite easy to tell apart the fakes.
