Last time in Windows 7, we can disable Windows Update, right?

But now we cannot disable it in Win10?

I feel those Windows Updates burden & slow down my laptop performance...

the easiest way to do it is to press winows key on your keyboard + R... then type services.msc from there on, go to update services. look at the drop down menu and disable it.

I prefer just keep it enable because nowadays so many "RansomWare" lurking around.
Windows Update keep that away from happening.

Since Windows 10 i had never have the need to disable it, in fact it is better to keep it enabled. But if really want to then just put it on tethering, it will not update but so won't your other apps

one caveat, when on tethering, every time it will ask if want to connect ie when opening Outlook, which is why it is on temporary basis.

here's link on how to turn on metered internet

Stopping "Windows Update" service is no longer working in Windows 10 since last year.
The only way is to "Metered" Ethernet Connection which there is no direct way of doing it.

Follow the suggested instruction here to "Metered" all data connections.

https://ff55coding.blogspot.com/2017/10/met...n-ethernet.html

In future, if you choose to update windows then you have to Un-"Metered" the data connection. "Metered" again after Windows Update is successfully done.

If you are using Windows 10 Pro,u can manipulate the settings through Group Policy section.....if you are using Home edition, then no choice bur rather set the metered connection.

I'm using WD 160GB mechanical HDD anyway

Now SSD is cheap enough, less than 200 can get 120gb, or less than 300 for 250gb. It makes a world of difference compared to disk plated hard drive.

I recently do a clean install of Windows 10 1709 on Atom z8300 powered system with 2GB RAM. The system is much smoother now, RAM usage only 900mb when nothing is opened.

That's the main drawback of SSD, storage size.

Some laptop have 2.5" and m.2 sata port, so can have SSD on m.2 sata and normal HDD on 2.5"

Or if older laptop that have 2.5" and CD/DVD drive, can SSD on 2.5" and normal HDD with adapter in CD/DVD drive.

add 100usd and switch to Pro(or 🙂) then choose non-standard update branch. You can defer upgrade for up to one month

I plan to get Windows 10 Pro for upcoming build, but is the Group Policy solution permanent, or will it just defer the updates for longer?

It's permanent, but due to security reason, suggest u set the update notification as prompting rather totally disable it.

Complain normally will happen till been attack by security loopholes due to not up to date......

But then after that should blame the OS or the Update? tongue.gif
