I wonder can you buy MacBook without the OS. Just like compaq bundle with FreeDOS? If possible then how much will that 1.8Ghz MacBook cost?

i dont think that is possible. all apple mac is bundled with mac os.

but if u can prove that you dont use the mac os, maybe u can claimed for a refund for it.

there is a customer in UK, first to be able to claim back a refund for microsoft XP that came with the DELL laptop he purchased. but he proved that he didnt need to XP because he use Linux, hence the successful refund.

but for apple mac, i dont think that is possible though.

and lastly, why do you need a macbook without OS?

i think it is more like...
you buy an apple computer, you get a free osx and ilife with it.

that is, if you buy one now, you'll get osx 10.4 and ilife 06 for free.
if you buy in june or sept, you'll probably get 10.5 and ilife07.

OSX for Intel is not available for retail, so unless you work for Apple what you have is illegal.

Hmm...actually I remember about this similar thread saying that a guy walks in the APPLE show room and ask the sales personel, " can we get cheaper MAC without the OS preinstalled ?"

It causes a stir as ppl in this forum replies the thread with --- "" BOSS!!!!! SAYA MAU ROTI TELUR TAK MAO TELUR or BOSS, CURRY MEE TAK MAO CURRY !!! "

hehehe.......it is not possible, unless u have PC and install v MAC OS, that is possible!!!

GOOD LUCK to u anyway. CHeers ~~ HAppy Chap goh mei...

PPL say u throw KAM, hope for a guy, throw banana hope for money, dun expect to throw apple hoping for a MAC ..haha.........

@TS

you wont get discount because you dont want the mac os.

and apart of that, you have to make sure the ur mac os cd is ppc based or intel based as newer mac is intel based only.

Reason of being no OSX Intel in retail is because all hardware that support OSX Intel already shipped with it. There's no older hardware that need to upgrade to it. Unlike PPC, which there's still many machine that might shipped with OS9 or 10.1 - 10.3 need the upgrade.

If you have the "downloaded", "copy from friend", "burn by my friend" or even "Lowyat plaza" version, shame on you. shakehead.gif

If you own more than 1 same model of Mac and want to save some $, maybe you can eBay the installer DVD later. There might be some buyer that lost or damage their DVD. Don't ever hope Apple retailer will bother to remove the OS and give you discount.

If you have interest in buying Apple computers, you do know well of the almighty OS Ten. The reason people get a Mac is because of it's OS, the beauty of the hardware is just the bonus.

Maybe you're just buying pack of chips and looking for the bonus which is just a mini toy. sweat.gif

Dude, I know you work in Apple Center in somewhere KL but this is like buying a bottle of water but you just want the bottle. Can you ask any stores to do that? Pour out the water and sell the bottle ONLY 2u? sweat.gif

...and I think TS should watch Get a Mac ads. Why buy Mac products if you do not want to use it. Why get a Mac and install those Windows/Linux and etc OS. Get a Mac purpose is to try something new which is the arrogant Mac OS Ten.

Go Apple Center in the States and ask them about it, it'll be the joke of the day for them.

why you just treat it as a joke?
my sister bought a mac 1.8Ghz (intel based) and she decided want to use Windows XP however would like to keep the design and outer appearance of the mac laptop. because she like the cosmetic appearance of a mac book.
therefore i thought buying a macbook without osx and swap with her machine.

your ideal or application in this case is very wise (too wise )
but .. your sis system would not work (windom Xp ) without the mac os X...

all mac pc need the original mac OS .. to boot up the mac system 1st...

and the apple mac osx are very iitelligent is their own way ... one mac os only can run on one mac pc .... meaning that when you install the mac os it is only good for that particular mac pc ...
cos the mac os always update you with the latest firmware from their support system ... so .. with the mac os install .. it read your pc system serial number ....

i hope this can be helpful to you ...

suns8630, please don't share wrong information. There's no real copy protection on Mac OS itself.

Please share your source for this particular information

I am a pround owner of imac G5 and a powerbook G4... so to say I am having two sets of Mac OS X ...

as the quote by "xaw5126" regards to the "wrong Infromation" I would like to just clear the air a little bit ......

with the two copies MAC os X that i am having .. i could not just simply... install it on other mac system as i like .....

tricky : Yes .. one can always install the copy of MAC OS X in any mac system BUT the copy that come with your MAC system IS only good for that particular system...(cos it read your system serial number for what so ever latest update on ALL the appication in your mac )

unless .. the copy that you have it is a stand alone (Mac os X ) and it is NOT the MAC OSX that comes with the system .....

so ,... in this case ... the person whom asking this question is intending to use his sister mac system Mac osx ....in another mac system ... !!!!

it is a very very doubt question ... :

I would be sure .. if you were to answer MAC personnal ... the answer will be a straigth NO NO

to my preference, an oblivious question would seem to cater to ignorance.

its like asking why does your tyre of your car spin when the car moves? why is white, white? why do i wear clothes? why do i eat? why do i sleep? why is rock hard? how stupid can one be?

suns8630, Your source of information is your own experience. However, I have used a copy of Mac OS from a MacBook Pro and installed on *another* MacBook Pro. The information that the installer reads is *not* the serial number, but the machine ID. That's why you can't normally do it with differing machine ID.

Also, this is the computer industry we're talking about. Almost everything can be hacked smile.gif

I'll repeat my question for clarity, where did you get this information from ?

That's why you can't do cross installs. The CDs/DVDs are for different generation machines with probably different hardware. It's not a copy protection thing. xaw5126 don't bash the guy biggrin.gif

From experience, MacOS traditionally has not had any copy protection until OSX Intel. I worked for a group that supported hundreds of Macs and we did our own legally questionable biggrin.gif installs from CDs/DVDs without problems. OSX before Intel does not have copy protection.

OSX Intel has copy protection in the form of the trusted platform computing module (TPM) on the hardware itself. Some binaries on the DVD are encrypted and can only be decrypted when it finds the TPM that exists on all Intel Macs but not on most regular Intel PCs. The hackintosh out there uses osx86 DVDs that bypasses the two things above.

Some Google links about OS X encrypted binaries and OS X copy protection

OK I take back the bash part biggrin.gif

Still not trying to bash anyone. Just trying to find some real sources...

Anyway, the TS is trying to get out of paying for Mac OS since he already has a copy. The correct answer for him is, that copy of Mac OS is for legal use with one machine only.
Unless he erases it and installs on the new Mac smile.gif and his sister goes on to Linux or Windows smile.gif

But as far as the machine itself, I still haven't seen any sources saying there's copy protection on the Mac OS itself. I mean, the Apple developers don't show any signs of any API or something related to it.

@tishaban, your links are mostly related to the Developer Macs that Apple was sending out after August 2005.

This is what I mean by a source
