Paying taxes should be viewed as a civic and moral responsibility by all citizens, says Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
"If all the citizens of a country realise that it is a moral and social responsibility to pay taxes, then that country will continue to prosper," said the Prime Minister.
He said revenue is needed to ensure that citizens have access to things like education, quality medical services and smooth highways.
"When you pay your taxes, you know that is your contribution towards the country and the well-being of its people," Najib said at the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN)'s 21st anniversary celebration here Wednesday night.
Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said the LHDN had a duty to continue enhancing its tax collection efforts and reduce the number of tax evaders.
"You must reduce this leakage, instil an element of fear among tax-evaders if you will, so they will not escape," he said.
Najib congratulated the board for collecting RM114bil in individual and corporate taxes last year.
"For 2017, LHDN is targeting a collection of RM127.7bil. I'm sure with a strong will, you will achieve this," he said.
