Since gaming is not the main priority, you may want to consider switching to AMD Ryzen, they come with more cores and will be faster in video editing (provided the software you use for editing do utilize the multicore architecture of current gen processor).

AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (8C16T, 3GHz base, 3.7GHz boost) - RM 1599
ASRock AB350 Pro4 - RM 469
G.SKill Aegis 16GB (8GB x 2) DDR4 2400MHz RAM - RM 550
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD - RM 464

Total: RM 3082 (ETECH price inclusive of GST)

Intel Core i7 7700 (4C8T, 3.6GHz base, 4.2GHz boost) - RM 1424
Gigabyte H270-HD3 - RM 515
G.SKill Aegis 16GB (8GB x 2) DDR4 2400MHz RAM - RM 550
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD - RM 464

Total: RM 2953 (ETECH price inclusive of GST)

Whats it's looking like from a perspective of someone who is trying to upgrade to the latest sockets from 6th Gen Intel?
AM5 or Arrow Lake?

[B][Budget] 7k, can extend budget if it's a reasonable upgrade.

[Purpose]
Home / Work usage / MONHUN WILDS

[Hardwares that will be re-use]
Monitors

[Monitor resolution]
1080p

[Games & softwares that use frequently]
Games: I only want to play Monster Hunter WILDS in coming Feb, doesn't necessarily have to play on max settings.
Software: Mostly Lightroom, Photoshop, 3 monitor productivity setup.

[Personal preferences] i7/Ryzen 7 preferred no need OC, can compromise on lower end GPU's.

[Location] KL

Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE - 155 (Shopee)
MSI B650 Gaming Plus Wifi - 899
Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB DDR5-6000 (make sure it is CL30) - 699
Gigabyte RTX 4070 Super 12GB Windforce - 2699
Kingston KC3000 1TB - 359
FSP Hydro GT Pro 850W - 579
Corsair 4000D Airflow - 299

RM6988 total (Mostly Viewnet prices)

Is it worth it it to bump it up to 9700x for productivity? I don't really care about game performances, PC will be mostly on 24/7.
I noticed it has almost the same specs and TDP, but is the RM300+ addition worth it?

It is still same 8 cores. Read this review then decide.

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-9700x/

i7-14700 or 14700K will be better for heavy usage.

Appreciate the link,

Im not really keen on getting on blue camp as the upgrade path is very limited for LGA1700.

If you upgrade every 5 or more years, platform longetivity becomes less of a concern. New motherboard prices these days are getting ridiculous as well.

AMD for 24/7 its not recommended... they hv another pro series for workstation usage.. but price more expensive than intel

Lets say I can wait till Feb, you guys think by that time LGA 1851 can mature to be even considered as a viable option?

avoid meteor lake, my assumption is that even if microsoft manages to fix some of the scheduling issues in 24h2, meteor lake still has many other problems to deal with and is typically slower than 13900K, 14900K, top of the line Zen 4 and 5s, and not as efficient as Zen 4 and 5. productivity wise, it won't be better without SMT even if it has amped up efficient cores.

I will be a bit contrarian here, AMD is super fine, sometimes better. can use 24/7 without problem with degradation. at least a few of my friends who are using Zen 4 CPUs + AM5 mobo have pleasant experience with them (especially the X3D CPUs). last time used to have USB drop off issues though.

u have 2 choices:
- go for AMD, get a good AM5 mobo, plan for longevity with presumably future AMD CPUs for u to choose from. more expensive (combining mobo + CPU), and I recommend 9900X instead of 9700X to match perf (all within 2-3% for applications and gaming). cheaper overall in the future as long as u stick to ur upgrade plan without needing to replace mobo, and if AMD not ditching AM5 anytime soon. remember to update bios
- go for intel, get a good LGA 1700 mobo, dead end as it ends on 14th gen. cheaper than AMD, 14700K recommended. want to change CPU next time = change mobo, hence may be more expensive in the future. remember to update bios
*
As of now I'm 70% leaning on getting AM5 for 9700X, the cost jump to 9900X and getting suitable mobo is too much and the potential would definitely be wasted for what I'm doing with my PC.

If you always use something such as AVX, Handbrake that 9700X performs obviously faster than 7700, why not? wink.gif
7900 is within reach if you crave for multithreaded performance but 9700X is faster in those software built with single-threaded language, i.e. the sluggish Electron web app (Chromium in disguise), Python.
I oppose this.  smile.gif I have APU running 24/7 as server and it has been working amazing well.

To clarify thing further :
- The pro series you mentioned is Threadripper.
- The actual pro series is Ryzen Pro / Threadripper Pro. They are for enterprise market, come with extra security (i.e. the infamous PSB fuse) / management interfaces.
*
I do use handbrake like twice a week to hardsub vids, kinda forgot to mention that but I don't think that's enough to justify as a reason to upgrade because I rarely uses it.

To clarify Im not really running home server with the PC, its just that Im a lazy mofo who dont want to turn off his PC so I can remote in anytime I want when I'm not at home.
Yeah I don't use Wake on LAN.

One more question to everyone, is the performance jump from nvme 3.0 to 4.0 really big?
Cause I do have one extra 980 1TB 3.0.

As the release of 5070ti is sometime around this month, I've made some change of mind upgrading from 1080p to 1440p from my previous plan.
Heard Intel kinda fixed the problems of their Core Ultras lineup with firmware and windows updates, and it somewhat need to have high speed CUDIMM to make it work best.

Right now, I am still undecided on which camp to go this this to replace my aging 6700k, might need some nudge from the sifus here.

[Budget] Under 10k for Rig only, going to need some good 27inch monitor recc too

[Purpose] Productivity mix with slight gaming (Monhun Wilds)

[Hardwares that will be re-use] 1080p monitor

[Monitor resolution] 1440p

[Games & softwares that use frequently] Monster Hunter Wilds, Lightroom, Photoshop, Large PDF Editing (Blueprint), Handbrake, Multiple RDP.

[Personal preferences] Will pair 1440p as main monitor and existing 1080p as side monitor.

AMD

CPU : Ryzen 9 9900x RM1949
Mobo : MSI B650 Gaming Plus Wifi RM899
RAM : Vengeance 32GBx2 DDR5 6000Hz CL30 RM1199
Cooler : Deepcool AK500 RM229
GPU : Wait see 5070ti or 4070TIS RM4000
SSD : Kingston KC3000 2TB RM549
PSU : FSP hydro GT PRO 850W RM599
CASE : CORSAIR 4000D AIRFLOW RM299
Total RM9723

Intel

CPU : Intel 265K RM1649
Mobo : Gigabyte B860 Aorus Elite Wifi 6e Ice RM1200
RAM : GSKILL 48GB 8200Mhz CUDIMM DDR5 RM1200?
Cooler : Deepcool AK500 RM229
GPU : Wait see 5070ti or 4070TIS RM4000
SSD : Kingston KC3000 2TB RM549
PSU : FSP hydro GT PRO 850W RM599
CASE : CORSAIR 4000D AIRFLOW RM299
Total(RM) RM9725

All price is taken from Viewnet pricelist except for some parts that are not listed like CUDIMM RAM and Intel B860 board

Any comments on the builds to make it suits my usage better?

Thanks in advance for the suggestion.

Both rig unbalanced... Thermal throttle for sure de... N to max out 5000 series potential...u need i9.. quite a disaster when they benchmark i7 range with 5080..
*
So I need to get better air cooler to avoid thermal throttling? or just go AIO?
if i7 is not enough for draw the best perf of 5070TI, something drastic needed to be done. Imagine the incoming shitstorm.
