Hi all, after 10 years - I have decided to upgrade my main rig.

What I currently have: i7 4790k (first one fried, bought a used one somewhere in 2021) + Asus Z97A, 4x4GB CORSAIR 1600MHz DDR3, 500GB Samsung 870 EVO SATA3 (upgraded from 840 Evo in 2021), Gigabyte 970 GTX (Upgraded a year after I built the PC) and it's been serving me well until I struggle to edit 4K videos on Premiere Pro starting in 2018 or playback H.265 videos and only up till recently, it started to BSOD on a daily basis. I'm guessing it's either the RAM, MOBO or processor.

Now, I don't have a budget, I just want to have a reasonably fast high-end PC without going too deep into the point of diminishing returns.

[Budget] N/A

[Purpose] Video editing, Lightroom, Stable Diffusion, Casual browsing, Python Coding, very very occasional gaming

[Hardwares that will be re-use] My 2x8TB HDDs

[Monitor resolution] 1080p

[Games & softwares that use frequently] Lightroom, DxOMark, Davinci, Premiere Pro, Handbrake, Stable Diffusion, Visual Studio Code, Selenium

[Personal preferences] Prefer something that can still be relevant for close to a decade, Noctua CPU cooler, Be Quiet or Corsair cases that are not flashy (absolutely no RGB please). I'm comparing against i7 12700k (to avoid the 13th/14th gen fiasco, let me know if i'm being too paranoid) vs Ryzen7 9800x/3d

[Location]: JB/KL/SG

Many thanks!

14th gen is safe to buy. Final BIOS fix is out. Just make sure you update to the latest. Also, price cut for 14900K as well.

Core i9-14900K - 1948
MSI Z790A Pro Wifi DDR5 - 1348
32GB DDR5-6400 CL32 kit - 699 (estimated - Price all over the place)

or

Ryzen 9 9900X - 1999
MSI X870 Tomahawk Wifi - 1499
32GB DDR5-6400 CL32 kit - 699 (estimated - Price all over the place)

Corsair H150i Elite Capellix XT - 850 (Shopee)
Gigabyte RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB Windforce - 3799
Kingston KC3000 2TB - 559
FSP Hydro GT Pro 1000W - 649
NZXT H7 Flow case - 569

RM10421 total for Intel, 10623 for AMD (Viewnet prices)

48GB DDR5-7200 kit also available but price is all over the place.

Thanks Tristan, how's MSI motherboards fairing these days? I've had bad experience with MSI boards more than a decade ago, i'm usually on Asus and Gigabyte's camp

Im surprised you could still edit 4K with a 970 GTX  shocking.gif

Media edit apps are getting to be more reliant on GPU so go max on the GPU budget and you just only need everything else to be reliable... try:

12700K/12900K (Intel said they fixed 13&14 Gen, but can you really trust them?)
MSI Z790-P
Noctua D15 G2 (regular)
16/24 GB x2 DDR5 ValueRAM (JEDEC 4800/5200 MHZ. Try not to get XMP RAM if want ultimate stability)
4TB Gen4 NVME SSD (as I listed above) + 4TB Kingston NV3 SSD (as scratch disk)
*You can reuse the 2x 8TB HDD as mass storage but using NVME SSD will speed your job a lot*
4070TI Super/ 4080 /4080 Super (NVIDIA still king in media productivity)
1000~1200W Platinum PSU (with at least 10 year warranty so it last you that whole decade)
Airflow focus case like Corsair 4000D, Antec P20C, Montech Air 903 Base (for no RGB. Or else 903 Max & turn off RGB)

AMD still has quirks for productivity work usage.

8bit H.264 4k is doable but needs a bit of patience haha. After spending sometime getting myself up to speed on the current processor market, I am more inclined towards the red camp. AMD with their 4nm architecture is leaps ahead. Plus, I've heard that after the X3D chips unveil on the 7th of Nov, 3 days from the time of writing - the non-X3D chips will see a price drop, making it even more lucrative.

How's MSI mobo fairing these days? Tristan (see quote below) mentioned that Asus and Gigabyte has more issues lately.

No idea for MSI. Asus and Gigabyte has more issues for the past few years.

This is a work pc. Unless you want to deal with potential "I don't know which chip has X3D" issue on gaming. You have so many M.2 slots. Definitely more lanes than B650. I think issue is over exaggerated.

I wouldn't want to feed greedy distributor. Paying so much more for better acoustics and less performance is no thanks.

I source my Noctua parts from China, effectively bypassing IAT and saving up to 50%

Hi all, is my build optimum? i.e. any jarring bottlenecks?

I don't really game (may try gaming with this rig), mainly for casual use and the occasional video editing/LR Classic

TBH your build is solid but overspecced for casual usage. For video editing I would reco go with Intel rig as video editing can make use of Intel Quicksync. AMD encoders are not there yet. Perhaps Ultra285 nonK + Z890 Tomahawk Wifi?

As for nonRGB case, go with Corsair 4000D or else bigger is 5000D or else bigger is 7000D or else the biggest kahuna 9000

After being on Intel for many many decades, I have decided to try the red camp. I'm aware of the drawbacks, I figured that I might be able to live with it.

Since your going to have RTX card its not too bad as you can also leverage on NVENC encoders for quick & dirty transcoding. However I find that its not very space compact unlike using CPU encoding. 9900X will work well with Handbrake & others that utilise multicores/threads. Going AMD is not too bad in that sense.

If your planning a build soon better dont wait, RAM, SSD, even HDD prices are rising fast, GPU prices likely will soon hike due to GDDR getting more expensive, AMD might follow Intel to raise CPU prices too.

Yup yup, that is what I have in mind too, thanks for the advice

Casing wise, I ended up going with the Asus ProArt PA401

Is this not enough to play Wuthering Wave? Uncle not a gamer, but my son initially says it was ok, but now claims it is not good enough in terms of gpu. All settings set to low and only get 24 FPS. Hence, unable to dodge some attacks.

I looked at the screen when he plays, it seems more like it is a difficult game and you need to have patients in order to "learn" how to pass each stages. He blames the pc.

Some expert please give more insights and advice. Now he is demanding for another pc, one that is really gamer built.
*
Anything below 30fps is pretty unplayable, 60-100fps is the sweetspot for actions games. Not sure how demanding the game is, but given the form factor of the NUC-like PC; I suspect the processor is thermal throttling

Its an okay case as far as cases go in functionality. Except your paying Asus tax for just the brandname. As long your happy with it its alrite.

Yup love the wood design haha, the only downside is it can't fit GPUs larger than 315mm, and only can support 240mm AIO radiator.

Which is fine, I don't foresee myself upgrading the GPU and neither am I fan of AIO coolers
