I just completed my studies in Finance/Stats and got an offer to work at one of the largest asset management (unit trust) companies in Malaysia as an entry level junior exec in Risk Management.

For someone looking to make a career in Risk Mgmt and with an eye to get in to CorpBanking or IB later on, is this a good starting point?

The jobscope is shared as below:

•Perform risk assessment and evaluation of the principle risks of the Company and the funds it manages

•Develop and/or review risk management policies and procedures for the Company and the funds it manages

•Maintenance of the Risk Register templates of the Company and independent review of the annual risk register review conducted by business and support units

•To prepare risk management reports to Management and respective Committees

I'm pretty well versed with unit trust funds and know the fundamentals of risk and investing. I just want to know your opinions as to whether this is something you would get in to or not.

Thanks!

Risk management is considered a specialized field within the bank. Easier to jump to other bank doing RM but difficult if other field. RM is considered a valuation department (based on economics & statistics). Maybe you may also target the asset management / fund management side which track and monitor the investment of the fund? Easier than to CB or IB. Unit trust is just one financial product. CB and IB may cover others such as Equities and Bonds.

Corporate banking is more towards sales + finance. A bit unrelated.

IB have many branches but if its CF/M&A side, they focus more towards financial modelling, project management and pitching.

Regardless, would this be a good opportunity to explore based on the job description and type of company? Or is it something you would recommend against people considering?

I did indeed have a desire to join the fund management side as a buyside analyst but don't have an opportunity, probably due to my background. But I have started researching stock settings on my own and it is something I can try for again by pitching my own report papers in a year or two time.

While considered middle office, I would say starting in risk would put you in a good position to lateral over to the fund management side of the business. Do the CFA along the way if you intend to stay in asset management.

Cheers.

Just a thing. This job will be mainly focused on operational/enterprise risk with some market risk on the side. Would this be something less desirable? Or is it still a good field to get in to?

For financial institutions (banking and insurance), it’s quite hard to jump between different segment. You have the risk and compliance segment, the corporate banking and relationship management segment, the asset management division, corporate finance and M&A, treasury,… et al. Even transfer within own bank is difficult if you want to jump from CF to treasury. As it’s a highly regulated industry, specialisation is very high in Financial institutions.

If you are interested in the buy-side analyst, join a boutique firm to gain working experience + take up CFA for certification + take SC & BNM license. You will have much higher chance than jumping from RM. I think RM is also quite big, it depends on which side you are working on. There are the data crunching part and the economical market risk. If you join RM, your exit opportunities will mainly be in RM. Can look at jobstreet / linkedin to see exit opportunities after few years.
