I have spoken to LeaseWeb before, they are quite liberal in their usage policies. Was planning to setup a TF service there, but in the end, i was like, i didn't want to go through all the hassle administrating a service; if things go wrong then people will blame me. TF is very much DIY-friendly anyways. smile.gif

Furthermore, there is no such thing as "unmetered" really. Their sysadmins monitor bandwidth traffic, and if one particular server is hogging all the bandwidth, they will shut you down. This is because they themselves have a limited amount of bandwidth to distribute, and if they find one VPN server utilizing a disproportionate amount of the bandwidth, they will surely take corrective action. They also have their other customers to consider.

If you go with LeaseWeb, you definitely need to limit the number of users to make the project viable. What you need to check is whether they allow VPNs to be run from their servers.

With TF, i would only have accepted 5 users, allocating each a limit of 200GB transfer a month (which is a lot really, unless you're a power user), and charge about RM40-50 each per month.

To be honest, i've now got 4 TF servers running from different locations. 2 from HK, 1 from SG, 1 from US. All 4 hosts have pretty strict AUP, 1 even has a clause that specifically bans TF-type software. All shared hosting-type accounts, very cheap, about RM10 a month.

All have been running smoothly for the past month almost.

I'm sure these people monitor their servers: CPU, bandwidth, network utilization, script usage, etc, etc.

So either 2 things have happened:

1. They do not notice my TF installations (therefore they are not doing anything about it)

or

2. They notice, but just dont care because i'm not causing any trouble (not using excessive bwidth, cpu, resources.)

With 4 accounts spread across the world, i've got 6gb of storage and more than 100gb of combined bandwidth per month. That's more than enough for an average user. Total cost: <RM40 a month.

Ftp downloads for 80-120kbps.

If one of them shut me down, so what, i pay on a month to month basis anyways, its so cheap, and finding a host is so-so easy. Within a day i'd have replaced the account i lost, at virtually no additional cost to me.

So in summary: who cares what the AUP says. Do as you like, and if they shut you down, just say sorry, feign ignorance, and move to the next host.
