To be honest, sometimes it's still cheaper to buy it off eBay due to markup by local seller...be patient, keep browsing and you'll eventually find yourself a good deal
If you think you're good at tinkering stuff, look for those with slight problem such as dust, minor fungus, sticky/oily aperture blade etc...those can be very cheap
If it is a popular lens, you'll be able to find a lot of disassembly guide (
example here) out there to help clean things up and restore it to nice working condition
Google on that particular lenses that you are interested before you buy, see what others say.
