Thanks everyone to feedback on my queries; Basically I'm looking for Unrooted box to play the following:
1. AOTG
2. playtv@Unifi
3. KODI
4. Preferably can play 4K Videos because this is the trend now.

Hello Sifus,

Similar to bro tharmaraj, I'm also looking for an Android Box to play Astro Go, playtv@Unifi and Kodi among others.

I have pinpointed Minix U9-H as the box to go for. But I'm a complete novice when it comes to Android, as I have always been using Apple devices and never owned or used an Android device. Thus there are some questions with regards to the usage of this Minix box:

1. The unit that I'm going to purchase is "clean", without any pre-installed app (I think). Thus how can I install Astro Go and playtv@unifi? Is it through Google playstore? Do I need to register a Google playstore account to download the app? If yes, can I use my existing Google ID (Gmail) to do that?

2. With regards to Kodi, I understand that there are some "add-ons" which would allow me virtually unlimited possibilities to watch and stream contents. But how do I insall these add-ons? Is there a "store" within Kodi that allows me to do that?

3. I have come across lots of mention of the term APK, may I know what is this? If it is useful for my content streaming needs, how do I install that?

4. I understand that this Minix box is installed with Android version 6.xx, and that is not the latest Android firmware. Can I update it to the latest Android? If yes, should I update it? Will the installed app in the box be lost if I update it?

Thanks a lot!

1. Yes. Through G.playstore. Login using your gmail.

2. Go and google the name for which specific add-on or even a 'build' (a template which got a prefixed add-on). Then go youtube. If the name popular enough, someone will do video tutorial on how to install/setup/setting.
Example: Build Chart

3. APK is what we call the apps installer. i.e: Facebook APK - then google for the download link

4. No idea, better wait for someone who own the actual box.
*
So a "build" is a combination of multiple add-on?

What's the difference between an APK with an app available on Playstore? Cos till now I'm only familiar with iOS, and you just download an app from the app store. Are APKs available in Playstore?

Thank you for your answers!

blackie19 Yes, you should keep it updated without losing whatever you've installed. The box you have in mind is a reputable box with excellent stable firmware

According to the official Minix website, the latest firmware available for Neo U9-H is 6.0.1. Does this mean that I can't update it to the latest Android firmware? Thank you for your answer!

I'd pick the S905x series.. AMLogic plays nicer..
1. Yes, Minix ships their devices as stock as possible.. Just the way I like it. Lean and mean. Then customize as to your liking. Android is all about customizations. iOS? Well you know, it's called a walled garden. As long as you don't plan to venture outside, you are good. With Android, venturing outside the prison walls is highly encouraged.. At the cost of bricking your device of course..  smile.gif

2. First you need to read up on Kodi.. What it is, what it does and how it works.. The rest will be understood along the way. There's a dedicated Kodi thread under this section, where I've setup the first page.. Take a read.

3. The term APK refers to the installation file for the Android OS. Officially as in (.apk).. This is similar to .ipa for iOS and .exe for MS Windows or .dmg for Mac OSx. Similarly, you tap to install. Install good stuffs? Profit.. Install crap?.. Well, you get it by now..

4. Minix has their official releases. Releases are pushed as OTA (Over The Air) and if installed as such, should maintain your settings or previously installed apps. However, if you do the manual download unto usb and flash method? That will wipe your previous data. This is good for a clean start, in case of corruption, failed boot, etc. Custom ROMs are available of course.. Though, since still a noob, do NOT venture into the realm of custom ROMs, not until you've gotten sufficient knowledge about what this is all about.. More importantly, how to recover from a soft brick. Golden advice? Never flash or mod when you can't 100% predict the outcome. Saves you from a hard brick. A hard brick is often impossible to reverse.. Means dead box..junk..
Read page one and get this.. There is NO such thing as a TV Box.. There are however, devices that through legal (well mostly illegal) means, can TRY to mimick what you can get legitimately and easily from Asterruk.. Again, read page one. Spend less time worrying about the service and more time on a capable device and reliability instead. No, VPNs are not necessary..Yet.
Builds, formerly stuff I liked.. But no more.. Think of it as a pre-customized set of addons and settings that can be shared. In its true form, it's meant to help people get back on their feet fairly rapidly would you suffer an issue.. And or share your setup with others who fancy it. Now, if you like a particular build, you have to trust that the creator is legit and not going to leave back doors open or some crap.. Yes, Kodi on its own is perfectly safe and won't cause any harm. Official addons are vetted by the Kodi devs as safe too (not unlike how Apple and Google vet apps in their stores). Third party addons can be clean or not.. So install carefully.

Apks.. Explained above..

Minix updates.. Also explained above.

U9H user here.

Minix is a bit slow in updating their firmwares, but new firmware development is ongoing as per latest update on their new forum. www.theminixforum.com

7.1.1 was released previously but they withdrew it back due to lots of bugs.

for myself, I am still on 6.0.1 (latest firmware release by Minix) but using custom ROM Android TV OS. Really digging the leanback experience of Android TV OS.

I do not see any need for now to get the latest Android version just for my light usage. e.g. iptv, youtube, kodi, iflix, astrogo, unifitv.

sure, we all want the latest firmware/patch, but for what it is now, this box is solid as a rock.

Bros, thank you for the answers.

I installed the Minix yesterday and log into the pre-installed Google Playstore using my Google ID. I managed to download playtv@unifi app from the playstore but I was not able to find Astro Go in it. May I know why?

Is there any other way to install Astro Go in Minix Neo U9H other than through Google Playstore?

Thank you!

This is exactly why there's a first page and why we repeatedly keep telling noobs to read it first. If you did, you wouldn't be asking such questions in the first place. Go and read it thoroughly! It's free and helps you to help yourself... Not me or others who already know things.

I've read the first page and I could't find any information about Astro Go app not available in Google Playstore.

Post #4 I believe, anyway just try the method I shared. I'm using it since day 1 and no issue at all.

Post #4 mentioned "other sources", without indicating which.

You, on the other hand, told me to look from apkpure, which I did, and I managed to install Astro Go from it. Thanks bro!

Anyone here using A3 Airmouse together with a Minix box? Does yours drain the batt fast? My 2 pieces of AAA battery would get drained within 1 week. Is this normal?

Same issue here with my A2 Lite mouse. I Googled and it is common issue but we have folks here who have no issue with the batteries..

I'm using A3 with U9H.

Bought them in March this year, I remember I've only had to change the batteries twice until now..I'm using mr diy battery only.

Just to add I rarely use airmouse feature since I'm running Android TV OS.

Firstly what type of batteries are you using.. All AAA batteries aren't made equal. I use Eneloop rechargeable and they've been great.. Lasts 6 months easy, with almost daily usage..at a time. Neo A2 Lite here.

The battery problems still persist. I have given this up and started using 3rd party wireless keyboard and air mouse.

My Sony HT-300 soundbar is connected to my Samsung 55MU6100 TV through bluetooth. When watching TV or using native apps found in my TV such as Youtube or Netflix, there is no problem with the synchronization between the sound and the picture. However, when using my Minix Neo U9H, which is connected to my TV through HDMI, there is always a lag between the sound and the picture. The lag is about 0.5 second.

Is there any way to solve this problem?
