I'd pick the S905x series.. AMLogic plays nicer..
1. Yes, Minix ships their devices as stock as possible.. Just the way I like it. Lean and mean. Then customize as to your liking. Android is all about customizations. iOS? Well you know, it's called a walled garden. As long as you don't plan to venture outside, you are good. With Android, venturing outside the prison walls is highly encouraged.. At the cost of bricking your device of course..
2. First you need to read up on Kodi.. What it is, what it does and how it works.. The rest will be understood along the way. There's a dedicated Kodi thread under this section, where I've setup the first page.. Take a read.
3. The term APK refers to the installation file for the Android OS. Officially as in (.apk).. This is similar to .ipa for iOS and .exe for MS Windows or .dmg for Mac OSx. Similarly, you tap to install. Install good stuffs? Profit.. Install crap?.. Well, you get it by now..
4. Minix has their official releases. Releases are pushed as OTA (Over The Air) and if installed as such, should maintain your settings or previously installed apps. However, if you do the manual download unto usb and flash method? That will wipe your previous data. This is good for a clean start, in case of corruption, failed boot, etc. Custom ROMs are available of course.. Though, since still a noob, do NOT venture into the realm of custom ROMs, not until you've gotten sufficient knowledge about what this is all about.. More importantly, how to recover from a soft brick. Golden advice? Never flash or mod when you can't 100% predict the outcome. Saves you from a hard brick. A hard brick is often impossible to reverse.. Means dead box..junk..
Read page one and get this.. There is NO such thing as a TV Box.. There are however, devices that through legal (well mostly illegal) means, can TRY to mimick what you can get legitimately and easily from Asterruk.. Again, read page one. Spend less time worrying about the service and more time on a capable device and reliability instead. No, VPNs are not necessary..Yet.
Builds, formerly stuff I liked.. But no more.. Think of it as a pre-customized set of addons and settings that can be shared. In its true form, it's meant to help people get back on their feet fairly rapidly would you suffer an issue.. And or share your setup with others who fancy it. Now, if you like a particular build, you have to trust that the creator is legit and not going to leave back doors open or some crap.. Yes, Kodi on its own is perfectly safe and won't cause any harm. Official addons are vetted by the Kodi devs as safe too (not unlike how Apple and Google vet apps in their stores). Third party addons can be clean or not.. So install carefully.
Apks.. Explained above..
Minix updates.. Also explained above.

U9H user here.
Minix is a bit slow in updating their firmwares, but new firmware development is ongoing as per latest update on their new forum. www.theminixforum.com
7.1.1 was released previously but they withdrew it back due to lots of bugs.
for myself, I am still on 6.0.1 (latest firmware release by Minix) but using custom ROM Android TV OS. Really digging the leanback experience of Android TV OS.
I do not see any need for now to get the latest Android version just for my light usage. e.g. iptv, youtube, kodi, iflix, astrogo, unifitv.
sure, we all want the latest firmware/patch, but for what it is now, this box is solid as a rock.
Bros, thank you for the answers.
I installed the Minix yesterday and log into the pre-installed Google Playstore using my Google ID. I managed to download playtv@unifi app from the playstore but I was not able to find Astro Go in it. May I know why?
Is there any other way to install Astro Go in Minix Neo U9H other than through Google Playstore?
Thank you!
