Astro to gain if Android TV boxes banned

PETALING JAYA: In view of Singapore’s proposal to ban the sale of media streaming boxes in the country, analysts say Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd may reap benefits if Malaysia follows suit.

Earlier this month, Singapore’s Law Ministry said it was proposing a ban on the sale of set-top boxes or media streaming boxes with services that allow consumers access to pirated content.

Astro Go was never meant to be used with boxes. My box cannot even find this app via Google Play, only managed to install via manual way.

For Netflix, I think it is fine. Astro probably is sour over illegal IPTV providers.

This is precisely what I've been harping about for years.. Sellers who keep branding their boxes as pre-installed this and that.. Calling boxes as "TV boxes" etc.. Computers, mobile phones, tablets etc aren't sold as TV devices, but can run the same apps and output via hdmi even. They wouldn't dare ask to block sales of those.. Those sellers should have just stuck to selling boxes as is and then separate services.. But no.. Greed.. They've made their profits and now it seems users are going to pay the price and sooner than I anticipated. FYI, Astro Go app is built to only work on legit mobile devices only. Hence it's work or not attitude on some devices. Obviously, they want users to sub directly to them and use their propriety STB connected to TVs.. Not shared AOTG accounts. More revenue.
