Hi Guys,

I am in the process of upgrading my TV and also adding an Android Box..

I am looking at a Samsung UA55K5300A its a 2016 Smart TV for around RM 2600.i was planning on just a normal LED non smart TV but with the prices so low for the Smart sets its hard to resist.

Will a smart TV still work ok together with a box such as Minix U9-H,or would it be easier to just use a non smart tv?

I have read every post on here but any advice most welcome thanks!

Ok sounds good thanks,

Would it be worth upgrading to a 4K TV at the same time? Anyone had experience with that plus an Android Box?

I looked through all these threads and finally just bought a Minix Neo U9-H with A2 lite. After around 1 year deciding...smile.gif

It came with FW002 firmware and i updated one by one via OTG up until the current FW006.This was very staight forward.

It came with Kodi 17.Beta 7, i simply updated to Krypton 17.3 via play Store.

I have never even used an android phone before now ,so you can imagine i was a bit in the dark to start off!

however so far everything is up and running without any problems..

I am also very impressed with the official Minix forum where one can get a ton of information and support from Minix itself.

Not he cheapest box but well worth it imho.

I am only using a basic FHD 32 LG TV,around 6 years old which is working fine...so next up on the list will be a new TV smile.gif

i am thinking no need to get a 'smart' tv?

Good point ,yes most tv now seems to be smart..but would that somehow conflict with my Minix box?

Do you mean i would have to buy a netflix subscription?

Agreed,32 in kind of tiny!

i am thinking 55 ,but most seem to be 'smart' ,is it worth it now ..or just get a 'dumb' one?

if you have an android box, you don't need to concern about smart tv.

put budget as a priority and then follow with the spec.

eg

budget max 3.5

list of model
size
type 4k/FHD
HDR/non-HDR
warranty
then filter according to the best.

Thanks, yes i will head over to the TV threads to get some leads on it.Don't want to drift too far into it here.

off the top of my head:

Max 3500 ish
Samsung/LG ?
55
FHD (dont really need 4k right now)
Non HDR should be fine i guess.
Manufacturers warranty.

Yes, it is worth it. You just have to be sure and get a truly smart one. Not one that claims to be smart but is buggy to operate.
I strongly disagree with this statement. In addition to the above, a smart tv is an added asset for media playback. It's easier to operate, faster to launch and if the app's are done right, for most uses, one would not have to always resort to the Android box for everything. I use my smart TV exclusively for certain local media file playback,  Netflix (Get full res + DD5.1 all the time), YouTube (casting direct from mobile devices and pc, Mobile screen mirroring and media casting of media content located on mobile devices..viewed easily and wirelessly on the big screen  and even the smart iptv for my iptv needs. Plus it's easier for our non-techy friends and family to operate the TV remote and or mobile device for casting, than to switch on the Android box and navigate.

Can one get an external player capable of doing all I've mentioned above and more? Yes, but we'd be talking of Nvidia Shield territory here and that's at significant cost and even then, the experience would not be as seamless. So IMHO, for a truly smart TV, an Android box is there to push further than what TV is already capable of doing. smile.gif

I guess if i owned a smartphone then a smart tv would be useful to connect to of course. However i don't right now so i am thinking along the lines of a 'dumb TV' .

I am finding the Android box quite easy to use just switch it on with the remote which also switches on the TV,i just prefer a bigger screen TV .

i do not want to get any local media chanels at all.

Anyhow thanks for your advice.

I jumped from 32" LG hd only tv to Hisense 50" full hd (not 4k), rm1.5k last year.. this year iinm dropped to rm1.2k.. it's ok if u have a tight budget n just want an upgrade from non hd to full hd.. can play via usb (but not x265 movies, x264 n others play fine)

Thanks .

Will look into Hisense brand.

Dumb TV seem to be dropping like stone, but might be difficult to find high quality one .

You are welcome.. It's 2017 and for awhile now, TV manufacturers all manufacture Smart TVs .. Question is how smart.. AFAIK, you will not be able to get a decent new "dumb" TV. So no choice. Since you prefer to use an external device, focus more on the TV's PQ instead. Good luck!

For info, which brand you recommend for smart TV.i guess you have done a lot of research before buying.

Most of them seem to lag behind what is offered by good android box, then you face the issue of will they update it regularly etcetc

i read that Samsung already not supporting the promise of updating the smart functions on tv bought over the last couple of years?

i really wondering if the 'Smart Tv' will go the same way as the 'Curved' which does not appear to be that popular, also the '3D' which looks to be dead in the water already.

Is it just another marketing gimmick to extract more $$ from the consumer?

Yeah, the Neo U1 still does all I ask of it..well, 1080p-wise.. Kodi and the usual ehem apps all work as intended. I guess it's just the feeling of getting a new toy to fawn over. Used to game on mine but quit cuz the PS3 controller isn't supported. Something about drivers not released.. Now forced to get either the PS4 controller or like an ipega game pad. Using the controller with games such as Asphalt Airborne on the big screen makes a whole lot of difference.

Since it's a Kodi fork and that very very few people here on the forums use it, best to discuss LibreELEC in the dedicated Kodi thread.

Not interested in the U9-H?

Get behind me... devil.gif  tongue.gif
I am.. If I had to buy right now? It would either be the Nvidia Shield or the Minix Neo U9-H.. End of story.. Except I don't own a 4K HDR TV or Dolby Atmos capable sound system as yet.. So all the extra perks will really be wasted.. And by the time I upgraded my AV equipment, pretty sure there'll be an even sicker Minix box or perhaps clear-cut winners from other competitors, to pull me away from Minix fandom  biggrin.gif

I hear you bro...i only have full HD tv (32inch!) so also my new U9-H bit wasted, will eventually get around to a new TV too LOL.
