Yes, it is worth it. You just have to be sure and get a truly smart one. Not one that claims to be smart but is buggy to operate.
I strongly disagree with this statement. In addition to the above, a smart tv is an added asset for media playback. It's easier to operate, faster to launch and if the app's are done right, for most uses, one would not have to always resort to the Android box for everything. I use my smart TV exclusively for certain local media file playback,  Netflix (Get full res + DD5.1 all the time), YouTube (casting direct from mobile devices and pc, Mobile screen mirroring and media casting of media content located on mobile devices..viewed easily and wirelessly on the big screen  and even the smart iptv for my iptv needs. Plus it's easier for our non-techy friends and family to operate the TV remote and or mobile device for casting, than to switch on the Android box and navigate.

Can one get an external player capable of doing all I've mentioned above and more? Yes, but we'd be talking of Nvidia Shield territory here and that's at significant cost and even then, the experience would not be as seamless. So IMHO, for a truly smart TV, an Android box is there to push further than what TV is already capable of doing.

I jumped from 32" LG hd only tv to Hisense 50" full hd (not 4k), rm1.5k last year.. this year iinm dropped to rm1.2k.. it's ok if u have a tight budget n just want an upgrade from non hd to full hd.. can play via usb (but not x265 movies, x264 n others play fine)

You are welcome.. It's 2017 and for awhile now, TV manufacturers all manufacture Smart TVs .. Question is how smart.. AFAIK, you will not be able to get a decent new "dumb" TV. So no choice. Since you prefer to use an external device, focus more on the TV's PQ instead. Good luck!

Yeah, the Neo U1 still does all I ask of it..well, 1080p-wise.. Kodi and the usual ehem apps all work as intended. I guess it's just the feeling of getting a new toy to fawn over. Used to game on mine but quit cuz the PS3 controller isn't supported. Something about drivers not released.. Now forced to get either the PS4 controller or like an ipega game pad. Using the controller with games such as Asphalt Airborne on the big screen makes a whole lot of difference.

Since it's a Kodi fork and that very very few people here on the forums use it, best to discuss LibreELEC in the dedicated Kodi thread.

I am.. If I had to buy right now? It would either be the Nvidia Shield or the Minix Neo U9-H.. End of story.. Except I don't own a 4K HDR TV or Dolby Atmos capable sound system as yet.. So all the extra perks will really be wasted.. And by the time I upgraded my AV equipment, pretty sure there'll be an even sicker Minix box or perhaps clear-cut winners from other competitors, to pull me away from Minix fandom
