I think it is not a great idea. PC consumes lots of power, and usually got fan, could be noisy too. Cable management and pc is big, it looks messy. Also long hours of usage wears your PC battery.
Tv boxes are cheap. Small size. Consume less power.
Maybe some one can calculate if the electricity consumption difference. Maybe saving on electricity bill can fun the cost of TV box.
You are correct.. Definitely saves electricity using a low powered box than a PC.. Even a laptop equipped with an Intel I series processor..Tv boxes are cheap. Small size. Consume less power.

Couldn't agree more on power consumption. Actually i am on trying stage. I got a low power consump. Laptop with intel U series processor, so i give it a try. But in terms of connectivity and stability, i found no issues running an emulator and watch tvbox contents.
In addition.. you'll face issues at....*Apps that require native hardware acceleration..there's only so much emulation software can handle.
*High bitrate content..Even some gaming grade GPUs suffer while trying to play certain x265 10 bit files.
*Your laptop... High chance will not support native 4K and or HDR10/Dolby Vision output via HDMI cable.
*Your laptop...High chance can't passthrough or process HD surround audio. Just downmix all to stereo or some pseudo-surround sound..
*What a sub RM400 box can do.. A RM1K laptop can't do.
*TV boxes sit there and do things while you are gone. Your guests/housemates have a remote and can enjoy content without worry much. Laptop? They need to know what they are doing and that's if you don't take the laptop along with you. This last part is optional..but you get the point.
