Lazada has a bunch of 70 odd ringgit ones as well

Check warranty info as well.

Not everything in lazada as warranty, especially those shipped from overseas.

I have been looking buy a microsd card. When I look at the spec on lazada, damn attractive. But when look at warranty, those are shipped from overseas and without warranty. Some with terrible user feedback experience.

For Android boxes, perhaps none but I can vouch for Roku & Amazon Fire TV. Roku especially is amazingly user friendly and simple to use. The initial setting-up of a Roku account is a pain though due to geo-fencing. But once setup, it works like a charm. Both oldies and kids can use it easily. I still miss my Roku 3.
Amazon Fire TV is slightly less user friendly since they push their Amazon Video content and search is not universal but I think they fixed it newer versions (I only have experience with the first version so can't comment on the new versions).
*
Flexibility and user friendliness are oppositing requirement. Android tv boxes is very flexible and most phone applications are easily loaded on to it. But these apps are not written with TV remote navigation in mind.

I side-loaded the 'Youtube for Android TV' on my box. The speech input command part is incompatible with the typical android tv box, but other than that, the navigation is very friendly, comparing it to the phone-version of Youtube app.

Anyone knows how to disable Ads or pop up in android box? Suddenly appearing every 3 minutes[attachmentid=9266683]

By any chance you sideload some new apk recently ? Some of the apk are actually ad virus.

Other than that, if you box is rooted, you can use Adaway to get ride of some of the Ads.

I'm quite intrigued by the box and it may possibly be my next device.. See how their support goes. Hopefully the retain support and grow. It's a little bundle of Open Source DIY tinkerer's paradise, in the sense that if devices such as the RPI interest you, you'd take a shine ti the Khadas VIM2 box too. Appears very versatile with multiple OS and user functions.

*
Yeah I am looking for a box which I can tweak comfortably.

The current box which I have, MXQ pro+ 4K, is not very opened to tweaking, even though it is rooted. Can't find proven firmware for the device. The toothpick reset/boot recovery isn't working. Info from internet says, it is not even wired in the AV port. USB burning, I can't get it to recognized the USB at all. I last time I issued 'adb boot recovery', it went into a factory reset, wiped out all my customization, and I wasted a lot of time restoring my previous config.

According to one of the posters, S912 has compatibility issue with youtube or something, and seems to be widely reported in internet. Obviously it did not happen to you ?

Looks good except the review on wifi quality is kind of almost non existence. The reviews just take the spec without actually testing them out. The spec seems to say it even support wifi ac, which is a plus; but there is no external antenna. So I kind of still skeptical about wifi.

Hi,

I am confuse now. I just need some help on your recommendation.

I only have simple requirement for the box:

1) able to install and run AOTG (understand mostly work on non-rooted box)
2) support airplay for iOS 9.0 and above, miracast
3) support OTA - over the air update
4) support 802.11ac
5) prefer decent processor for performance eg. S912 or
6) more RAM better, 3GB is great
7) storage not so much, 16GB more than enough
(only use it for streaming live tv, movies, youtube only).
*
Item (1) is not a simple requirement, as many tvboxes cannot meet.

I suspect the AOTG checks for two things :-

1. Root.
2. File/storage encryption.

So some unrooted boxes won't run either.

People saying Minix Neo can run some older version of AOTG. New AOTG seems unable to run due to browser limitation.

And also TM Unifi IPTV Box (Huawei EC6108V8) on the older firmware can run AOTG. However, the box seems to automatically update itself to newer firmware.

All the above is based on my guesss, as I have none of these boxes to verify.

Good luck and let us know if you got any progress.

On item 1, lucky for me AOTG still can run for my H96pro plus with SCV7 rom.

Agree with puchongite, it is difficult to find a tvbox to run ATOG.
It may run now, but 3 months later maybe no...never know.
*
SCV7 ROM is the default/original ROM or a user-flashed ROM ?

Are you using the up-to-date version of AOTG or some older version ?

Still using latest AOTG here.

Interesting.

HDPRO PLUS is a S912 3G 16G TV Box ? That's a perfect config.

Root as in SuperSU or Magisk/MagiskHide ?

Maybe the root detection might be faulty under certain conditions ?

Not all root detection work the same way.

It works on my rooted phone.

I could not test it with my tvbox because the bloody tvbox I haven't figured out if it is possible to go SYSTEMLESS ( aka alter boot image ).

*
If your box can do TWRP then you would be one step closer to Magisk.

Warning first: can potentially brick your device. Reason is very simple, because magisk installation alters the boot image.

Could you do me a favour ? Could you confirmed under some where of the Settings, if the device/phone encryption or storage encryption is turned on ? Suspect AOTG checks for it and refuse to run if disk is not encrypted.

Mine is S912 3gb/32gb.
Funny for me, non rooted itself cant run AOTG, but rooted with magisk to hide root only can run.
Forum link
http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-suppor...77-wifi-chipset

Magisk to hide root, i  starting from ver. 13.x and now running 14.3.
*
This proves my point, ie Magisk is effective in hiding root away from AOTG.

If not rooted, AOTG could go and check unlock bootloader and what not, so it could fail to run when no root.

I wont agree magisk is effectively hiding root.
I COULD ONLY GUESS If you original firmware is non- rooted then magisk could help hide.

Else if original boot already rooted and flashing magisk here does not help at alll.
*
The bold is an expected behaviour. It's not Magisk's problem.

Because those root are not systemless, the root binary somewhere on the file system. So root-detecting app just search the directories, they will detect the root.

To really hide root, one has to remove all previous traces the non-systemless root. That's the pre-condition of Magisk installation.

If I am not mistaken, the unit sold by Gearbest is pre-rooted.
What does this mean?
Could we just install Magisk v 14.0 ?

Some seller who are selling locally already root the unit.
Do we have to restore to original android 6 first before install Magisk ?

I am very new to the tv boxes, the term around and how to perform those installation.
*
I think it was mentioned that he actual overwritten the original rom and installed a new Rom from freaktab. That process will remove previous root.

The only thing need to make sure you match the model exactly or else the differences can cause havoc.

My advise to you is the goto that forum to read yourself.
Take couple of days to go thru the first few pages and also last 10-20 pages.

It is too much variation in H96 and even from same vendor also  have variations.

It is always VERY VERY risky if you dont understand...so stay away from it.

If you read but have very done flashing armlogic box before...also dont attempt if you still have doubt or dont have original firmware.

If you are sure and clear why not.?
*
So you are saying you bought yours from GearBest ?

There is a blue PCB and a green PCB. The one you got from Lazada is what color PCB ?

How's the wifi connection, stable enough ? If you have open it up before, did you notice that have internal wifi antenna ?

I am asking such detail questions ..... as I got one tvbox previously which does not have any internal wifi antenna ( the antenna is PCB track ). The wifi connection is really lousy !!!

No issue for me including streaming upto 4K movie within kodi.
FYI, i dont have av system so cant comment much on audio passthrough. I know from forum feedback is DTS work but no AC3.
Mine is green, but want stretching this again, but same vendor also have variations. Mine brought in Feb2018.

For wifi no issue with my h96 box.
I see feedback, that some of them have problem due to internal antenna was stick on the wrong place or drop out from the glue or the somehow contacting the ground signal.

You might want to check your and move away from processor or chips. Better if you drill a hole and make that antenna standing straight.

I don't mean h96 box. I bought a mxq pro+ 4k earlier. The antenna is basically a PCB track embedded into the PCB. There is nothing you can do about shifting.
