Which it appears, can't be read by the box (probably other Android boxes too). No choice, you'll have to reformat the external drive to NTFS (Windows preferred format) or ext4, which can be used by default on both Mac osx, windows and Android.

Is there really no app that can make Android boxes read HFS+? I've got close to 12TB of content. NO WAY I'm gonna reformat them...

Try Total Commander app and Paragon's plugin.. There's a trial period, so you can test if it really works for your device and hard drive. Then go paid... In future, when you'll be changing to another hard drive, first thing you do is to format it in a mor acceptable format like exFAT or NTFS before using it.

You could turn your mac into a PLEX server and setting your external drive as the media source. And install PLEX app into your android box. Your mac will act as a server streaming the media content through your network. The only caviat is your mac (PLEX server) will have to stay “turn on” while you stream from your android box.

It's all about the Standard and most boxes will support it. Questions arises as to how the fetched file is processed. if you've got a UHD HDR TV, you won't go wrong with the Minix Neo U9-H, it also supports playback of HDMI™ 2.0 (4K @ 60Hz).. Get it with the Neo A3 remote as well..
