Since this is the OC forum there's no need to explain why.

Got the i7 in 2012, and it's been running well at 4.4ghz since day1. However temps always bothered me slightly and since I don't plan to upgrade for another few years, why not lower the operating temps?

CPU : i7 3770k @ 4.4ghz, Vcore=1.19v
Cooler : CM 612s with 2x Gentle Typhoon's in Push-Pull

Note that the TIM used between the CPU die and IHS is critical - Collab Liquid Ultra or any other TIM with "liquid metal" properties is recommended.

BEFORE
Max temps with prime95 Small FFTs were a toasty 86c.

AFTER
Max temps with prime95 Small FFTs was 65c. Drop of 21c!

Some pics of the process

I can reach higher clocks (CPU can do 4.7ghz), but will leave it at 4.5ghz (1.22v, ~70c max).

Is it worth it? Absolutely, although you'll void your warranty.

With the newer CPUs (e.g. Skylake, Kaby Lake) it's best to get a proper delidding kit as the CPU wafers are really thin, or use the razor method if you're brave.

i got my i5-3570K 5 years ago
did strong 4.5GHz on 1.216 Vcore... 12 hours prime95 and LinX 4 hours++ stable...

untill i moved to itx mobo, then shift back to original tetsed mobo b4
(Asrock Fatal1ty Z77 pro-M > Asrock Z77e itx > Asrock Fatal1ty Z77 pro-M)

unfortunately, i tried back my used OC setting2 b4 as all component all the same except ssd (corsair Force GT > Intel 530) different OS(windows 7 > 10) and AIO cpu cooler (Corsair H70 > Corsair H60)

however the stress test failed within a minute... temp shown as expected the culprit which is reaching 101c++ then freeze bsod b4 restart trigger in

1stly i suspected the cooler not suffice enuf to cool down the heat, i shifted to a high end air cooler which is BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro...
hence the problem still occurs...

so the last resort is to delid the cpu, since no more warranty from Intel..i think y not...
last night using a razor blade technique (which is using a blade scrapper 2b precise) i bought this scrapper for rm1.50 from mr. DIY shop (got 5 pieces inside)
then carefully i proceeded with delidding my cpu

frankly speaking, the process didn't take much of my time..within 5-7 minutes i manage to separate the IHS from the die
but the silicon residue cleaning process did take me about 30 minutes to b done

i replaced TIM using a budget Mastergel pro (rm27 from all IT hypermart)
place all bak in rig..then 1 st attempt failed me... demmm temp spike above 100c++
then only i set the LLC setting to level 1..proceeded with linX yeah cpu going strong but with higher Vcore=1.288v
then only i change the LLC to level 2, and back to level 3
and only after that my cpu pass the 10 minutes linx test with 4.5GHz on 1.216Vcore

short story.....i had to delid my cpu after 5 years of use....
glad i did that...temp drop almost ~10c on my system

Very nice bro, sounds like the i5's degrading already. Recommend to change your TIM to a liquid metal type to ensure longevity (so you don't have to keep replacing your TIM...)

Ive delidded my 3570k and got roughly 20c temp drop, now running stable at 4.4ghz 1.23v, sad did not win the silicon lottery. My chip needs a huge volt bump to get 4.5ghz, although temps are still okay. In the end settled with 4.4ghz
