I wanted to built a 5900x system, but couldn't find any in stock at reasonable price for the past 2 months
so I got a 5800x instead few weeks back, currently all the parts are at my friend's place in process of building waterloop

today I got wind of 5900x back in stock and selling without bundle
my question is should I get the 5900x and sell off the 5800x?

originally gave up on 5900x and planned to use 5800x until when AMD releases 5900XT later then swap (if they make it)

Depends whether the current 5800X is gold or a lemon. Did any overclocking on it previously?

just tested boot to windows and run some benchmark tests

Intel's 10850K interestingly has higher RMA rates as well. I wonder why?
*
10850k is technically a lower binned of 10900k, so quality lower higher change of failure?

Sadly 5800X is the easiest CPU to get due to its poor value, otherwise I'd be rocking a 5900X now.
*
yupe, I'm sticking with 5800X now because even if 5900X stock available the price now jacked up
hoping got 5900XT version later then I would swap

IF or by the time they have a XT refresh, Zen 4 would be like right around the bend. What's the damn point lol?
That's also besides the fact that XT should have the best bins in the respective SKUs, considering they're having trouble even hitting the lofty numbers right now, I don't think things will change very much in the next 6-8 months.
*
same questions were asked for the zen 2 XT variants laugh.gif

anyways just hoping only, else I'll just stick with 5800X or swap to 5900X if back to launch price later this year

Im unsure of the mobo models ITX users have but I'm sure that there hasn't been a case of the chipsets melting, just as I'm sure that there are more than a handful of X570i users. If there was such as issue, it would have been highlighted in the community like the SF PSUs being faulty around 2q2020 or H1 potentially catching on fire.

I looked through the links and saw that they're on ATX but the thermals matched my experience on the ITX. I've got a couple giga X570is around and if we're going by anecdotes, the one in the smallest case I have (k39) gets to about 70°C during extended gaming. This isn't much of a problem as stated in the links given, unless I'm missing something.

Yes the chipset gets hot but it doesn't seem to be an issue.
*
I think you're taking the word "melting" too literally laugh.gif
Bonchi is probably using "melting" as a figure of speech signifying too damn hot only icon_idea.gif

guys, which area should I troubleshoot now
when I set 3600mhz xmp on my ram, it takes ages to even post
then after entering windows, everything is noticeably slower/laggy than when running at non-xmp default speed

it's a 5800x on MSI X570 Unify, Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL18-22-22-42 16GB x4
should I try updating the bios first or troubleshoot the rams 1 by 1?

Edit:
my bios is vA7, read that most ppl have this issue solved with vA8, gonna jump the gun and try it *fingers crossed*

Update:
updated bios and running 3600mhz xmp with no issues now
will continue to do more tests, but hopefully that's one less issue now

Huh? Who said so?

My opinion is that 5800x remains a stupid CPU because of its price being so close to 5900x. The latter also suffers less from temp hotspot, meaning better PBO and less irritating fan ramp fluctuations.

If you only need an 8 core, get a 10700k instead at this point or wait for RKL.
*
ppl recommend 5800x because easier availability than 5600x, and this suggestion is for ppl insisting on AMD system
plus 5900x price now is closer to 5950x old price

It is true that 5800x availability is more widespread than 5600x, that's probably the reason for the suggestion of it. But I still think that if anyone who wants just an 8c16t CPU, go for the 10700k instead.
Well 5800x has also risen to 5900x old price too. The 5950x is now also a RM4k CPU. 5900x can be had for RM3.1k, you're saving a measly RM600 for a 5800x...? Why?

5800x has the worst silicon quality if you want to play the lottery too. 8 cores 16 threads crammed into a single little chiplet, that's why the hottest reported Zen 3 SKU is the 5800x and NOT the 5950x.
*
your point is right, what you're asking is why would ppl recommend 5800x, and what I gave you were the reasons, doesn't mean the reasons must be right icon_idea.gif

I got my 5800x because I missed the period when 5900x was still at RM2.5k, followed by out of stock for a couple of months, but I already bought X570 mobo
I saw 5800x being sold at old msrp in January, so I just buy first think later, having a bad cpu is better than no cpu at all, thinking maybe future can get 5900x and sell off 5800x

I got a 5800x for about RM 2130 (slightly above its RM 2049 MSRP) as well back in late December when the 5900x was nowhere to be found for MSRP. Initially if you're comparing 5800x at RM 2049 to the 5900x at RM 2499 (was the MSRP 2449, 2459 or 2499, my memory fails me), then yes no way in hell I'd go for a 5800x, make so little sense even from a price point, we haven't even start talking about the temperature issues that were cropping up online specific to the 5800x.

Then I got the 5800x, installed it, used it and... pleasantly surprised. Cooled by an EK AIO 240, CP2077 load temps never breach 70c. Idles at 40-41c, and with my room A/C on, I've seen idles at 33c even. Most likely got a golden sample I guess.

The first thing you should do is check the power plan you're using, AMD chipset driver install 2 additional powerplan that boost responsiveness at the cost of your power bill sweat.gif
Set it to balanced mode first before fiddle with BIOS.
*
already on Balanced, before changing to Balanced can idle 70C to 80C shakehead.gif

My exhaust fan is using Noctua NF-A14 ippc3000. Running at 2000rpm. This casing surprisingly can dampen the noise. I also used external sound card now.

Uninstall rubbish apps like Corsair iCUE. Yes, some apps keeps your CPU from going idle.
*
using Unifans set to 1500rpm
tried with 2000rpm but only reduce like 5C, not worth the typhoon noise sweat.gif

using MSI mobo but didnt install Dragon Center

At Advanced Power Settings, under Processor Power Management, check if System Cooling Policy is set to Active. Will slightly help to reduce the temperature.
If don't want the fans to ramp up and down too much, set smaller difference of fans speed between the temperature. Mine if not mistaken is set to 20% increase from 40c till 60c.

Even just idling my Chrome still take 3 to 4 % CPU processing. Sometimes spike to 5%.

checked it's active, issue is my Unifans having drivers issue so the pwm not working, now fixed at 1570rpm

QUOTE(Bonchi @ Mar 29 2021, 09:20 PM)
In your balanced power plan, what % is your min proc state? Try putting 99% heard it works better.
*
0%

the power plan tristan suggested set it at 1%
