QUOTE(SSJBen @ May 17 2022, 04:44 PM) Buying Zen 3 on AM4 platform for new now is for pan7 people. For current Zen1/+ and Zen 2 users want to upgrade, still good idea to get a drop in CPU upgrade to Zen 3. lol... pan7 not everyone can get this I suppose

QUOTE(antaras @ May 22 2022, 02:28 PM) Currently have X570 mobo + R5 3600 + 16GB ram. Working with Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator and occasionally Premier/After Effects. Am feeling the proc "could" be a lil better. Am not really sure which/what to upgrade first for best bang for buck upgrade at the moment. Or is sticking with AMD still the right way forward. If you upgrade to 5900x, CPU performance will be double. If change platform you need to buy motherboard, higher cost or if maintain same cost then not much higher performance.

Thinking to upgrade because my cpu utilisation until 90% when I do many multitasking.

You might as well as get one complete CCD package. Preferably 5800x3D due to its large L3 cache size. Cause Ryzen with one CCD has half memory write speed.

Preferably you should upgrade to 5000 series since it's faster. Since you also going to get motherboard, check out Intel too, 12th gen only. AMD or Intel older gen, unless the price is a lot cheaper, not worth to get.

But also think about to change to i12 but the cost including mb is much higher.

Zen 3 5000 series B2 stepping are now much better than B0 and launch day Zen 3 models which were riddled with bugs. AGESA is also in a much better place than what it was in compared to Zen 3 launch. 1.2.0.3c if you're on Win10 and 1.2.0.7 if you're on Win11, these 2 work extremely well on the said OS.
Honestly now is a pretty good time to get Zen 3 if you already have an AM4 board preferably X470/B450 minimum, X370 while it works is still a little flaky.

5800x3D is pretty difficult to get a la carte. Even if you get it, still costs more than a 5900x which is bonkers.
Other than that, 5800x3D is a mighty hot CPU as well.

Same programs open and cpu utilisation only 50%. 5900x becomes quite a beast if you're willing to push the FCLK to 1900mhz (assuming yours can hit that, otherwise even 1800mhz is great), tighten RAM timings and optimize the cores with curve optimizer. There's quite a bit of unlockable performance from the CPU. This post has been edited by SSJBen: Jun 12 2022, 12:44 AM

Can't really give any valuable insight for air cooling the 5800x3d.. however I noticed that mine running pretty cool with my custom loop after using the PBO2 tuner desktop app. I suppose this will be quite useful for those air cooling it as well. And given that for the 5800x3d extensive RAM OC is hardly worth the time, (if performance is what you're having in mind) it's well worth to spend that time elsewhere and use it running corecycler to figure out stable settings. Here's a decent guide on how to do it https://github.com/PrimeO7/How-to-undervolt.../main/README.mdThis post has been edited by nrw: Jun 15 2022, 06:10 PM

PBO2 + CO is indeed key to low temps, not just for 5800x3D but for Zen 3 in general.
