Put in fridge is to slow their growth only.... room temperature is fine as long keep them dry lah.

Yups, only as treats. Mealworms are high in fat and protien and most hamsters enjoy such treats. In the wild, hamsters will eat insects like grasshoppers, crickets, grubs... as long edible they will eat it for extra protien.

Hamsters can eat lettuce but it is not nutritional and has a very high water content. Better to give other type of vegie.

Hun... Your hamsters that u put outdoor... When it rains won't kena the cages??I mean especially heavy rain...
*
Nopes... this is cause I put the extra umbrella.... the hamsters and rats outdoors have been fine for months through hot weather and heavy rain. Tried everything already and all of them are ok and dry....... it is possible to keep hamsters outdoors provided got shelter, a water bottle and everyday follow up care. I spend about 1 to 2 hours a day just feeding, cleaning and checking those hamsters there.

I kept saying ppl saying their RC bites, bla bla bla until i got the phobia written on my head "Stay Away From RC" tongue.gif
Whao .. gerbs.  Wud colour did u buy ??  brows.gif
eeeekkkkk .. outdoor house.  Take some pictures and show us  biggrin.gif DIY huh ?
*
This is cause petshop RC bites.... can ask Bizen, I think I let her hold a few RCs that day.... never bite also.

Not really DIY... made of bricks and concrete... cement floor... roof and giant umbrella...

Added on March 25, 2007, 11:45 pmThe most important thing is that outdoor animals must be in cages coz tanks got bad ventilation.... for hamsters especially. I'm still in the middle of improving the whole set up... must wait till holidays to DIY some cages and also purchase large cages.... kinda hard since not many places sell the cages that I need.

One thing about my setup is.... got dogs... so won't have cats. Second.... they are housed safely where it cannot fall or drop since all the cages are stacked properly inside the house and also some are caged inside a large cage... Eh, I do take my hamsters seriously ok? As I said, it is possible to house outdoors provided the person takes really good care and precaution.

Oh... I see... Unlike my place... If there is heavy rain.. everywhere sure wet although there is extra umbrella... My place got a very wild weather..
By the way, Hun's RC is really tame... won't bite... SoulReaver and I handle her RC that day  icon_rolleyes.gif

I guess coz the house my hamsters are in has a low roof so water would not get in easily. It was originally made for my dog to be dry in the inside and warm during cold nights. My dog passed away so now convert to my hamster place. Maybe lah... but so far, I have tried standing in that place during rain.... only my feet got wet hahahh.... so this is why I dare to put outside. If put inside... can pengsan. LOL.... You noticed the strong smell rite? hahahah.... now the RC pups are inside my house in the kitchen. The only drawback about that hamster house is that I keep banging my head against the roof LOL.

Gerbils full time indoors coz well, less smell lah. Also, they are in tanks and tanks is not suitable outdoors.... unless I go burn 100 holes in the tanks LOL...

Why do try the  CHIPSI plus Green Apple for bedding.

I used this about 1/2 years, no smell and hamster like it.

I changes this also because of the smell.

At starting, the smell was horrible(in put in my dinning).

My mother complain me on the smell.

So I decide to changes the bedding.

At last I found this  CHIPSI plus Green Apple.

No more smell, mom not more make noise. thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

Gerbil also can used this  CHIPSI plus Green Apple as bedding
*
Any bedding that is scented is a no no for rodents.... lemon, apple... ai, not good. Like what Reanne said.... the phenols and chemicals in the bedding can harm the hamster. This is why majority of hamster keepers these days use wood pellets, recycled paper cat litter and corn cob. Chipsi Super is quite ok since it uses Beech wood which is safer than softwood... but it still smells strange to me...

*
There is no way you can avoid the mom from cannibalizing the babies. Sometimes the pup died for nothing so naturally the mom would eat the body to clean up the cage.... or maybe the pup born cacat? Then the mom would end its life....

Just leave her alone. I would say never place the male back since the male will automatically breed with her again. It may sound nice where the male got teman the female blah blah.... but we must think of the outcome later.

Leave extra food, feed mealworms. Scrambled eggs is better. The yolk has nutrition while the egg white is high in protein.

Cover the cage, place in a quite place that has no direct sun light. Keep the water bottle full and food bowl full with the normal hamster food. That is enough. Only begin to touch the mom and babies when already 2 weeks old.

QUOTE(arraille @ Mar 26 2007, 10:14 AM)
juz wondering, which one do u like the most... RC or WW...? hmm.gif
*
If between those 2 dwarf... i like WW coz they look like they are wearing shoes LOL.... got thick padded feet. Campbells and Syrians got mousy feet.

QUOTE(Syrian @ Mar 26 2007, 05:04 PM)
LOL.  Robos are cute neh tongue.gif.  Then among the three, which do u like the most?
what is DTW??

I always hear ppl complaining saying that hteir hamsters stink.  But so far, i've neva come across this problem.  I have 2 syrians and 2 robo in my room and i change thier bedding twice in 3 weeks.  No smell at all wor  rolleyes.gif  I use chipsi classic.
*
Robos cute but not handle friendly.... So this is why I do not like.

Among the three.... WW lah... but I like Syrian also since their personality and size is good to handle.

Maybe your hamsters do not drink enough water.... coz when hamsters drink lots of water, they pee more and smell more.

QUOTE(BlueHeng @ Mar 26 2007, 05:15 PM)
I've tried chipsi plus apple before. It's not much use. Apparently IMO, when the pee smell+apple scent, the smell is worse.. aiks.. BC still the best although expensive. Safe to use as well because it's basically just processed paper.
What breed is your hamster? I've read MANY forums and guides saying for some dwarfs like RC, you can leave the male in together as it will help raise the pups. Not sure how true though.. I nvr let my hamster breed so far.
DTW= Dark Tailed White. The gerbil is totally white.. but if the temperature is right, after 5/6 months when fully adult, the tail will become dark colour..
*
Hahah... BC is memang best.

Yes, the RC male will help to take care of the babies.... well, from what I have seen, the male will never be aggressive towards his own pups and will sometimes sleep with them or eat with them. Robos do that too. Aiyah, almost all dwarf species make good mom and dads.... but its just that if we put them together, sure will have pups very often.

QUOTE(endanger @ Mar 27 2007, 12:45 AM)
Hi guys,

I had some experience with syrians many years ago when I was in form 1. At that time there are either very few dwarf hamsters on the market or they are very expensive so didn't get the chance to own one. A week ago I just bought 3 winter whites from my supplier and keep them in my old Habitrail Carnival model cage. They are 2 females 1 male.

Recently the male would always fight with one of the females. Just 2 days ago, it kept chasing the one female and karate her until bleeding. It makes her so frightened of the male, running away whenever she encountered the male one. So I quickly took out the male and put it in another cage. But the 2 females could get along.

Can anybody give some opinion on this? I thought dwarf hamsters are sociable and need not to be separated.
*
Like what Reanne said.. not all dwarf can get along. I noticed that Winter Whites do not like to be in groups. Sure fight... even as a pair, there is a high chance that something may trigger fighting. For campbells... slightly better. They do not fight as much but keeping 2 campbells may result in naughty nippy campbells sometimes.

Robo hamsters are much better in pairs. Campbells and Winter Whites are best housed alone... just to be on the safe side lah unless the hamsters are siblings, then it would be ok but I have seen sisters or brothers suddenlu turn aggressive towards each other.... so it depends.

Yes BlueHeng, that is ok. Hamsters can eat science plan dog kibble. They can also take Royal Canin too.

1 day ah.... since those kibble quite big, you can put 2 pieces a day... and only refill if both kibble are nibbled and eaten lah. Normally the kibble is like a treat to the hamster and they will eat it when they want more protein.

Royal Canin is smaller than Science plan... the science plan kinda bigger... dunno lah, coz I got both and Royal Canin is smaller. Anyway, hamsters will only eat them when they want to eat the kibbles. I mix all my kibbles with their food so I don't really know how much they get each day but I can roughly see each bowl got about 10 pieces of kibble. Hahahah.... no need to worry. Hamsters will eat more of the hamster seeds and mix than eat the kibbles.

Bath? Dangerous to bath lah.... wet bath you would need to do it really fast and use tearless baby shampoo.... also no hair dryers since hot hair dryers can burn the delicate skin.

If really smelly... get a wet cloth and wipe the hamster till damp. Then get those dry small animal shampoo or baby powder and rub the dry shampoo or powder into the fur and skin. Sure smell nice later.
