SAN FRANCISCO: Sales of desk and laptop computers declined last year, extending a slide started in 2012, according to figures released on Wednesday by two market trackers.

Preliminary figures from Gartner indicated that PC shipments last year tallied 269.7 million units in a 6.2% decline from the previous year.

Internation Data Corporation pegged the number of machines shipped last year at 260 million, calculating a 5.7% drop from the previous year.

”Stagnation in the (personal computer) market continued into the fourth quarter of 2016 as holiday sales were generally weak due to the fundamental change in PC buying behaviour,”
Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said in a release.

”The broad PC market has been static as technology improvements have not been sufficient to drive real market growth.”

While there has been growth in sales of innovative new machines such as hybrid laptops with removable “tablet” screens,
the demand was not enough to offset a drop in sales of traditional models, Gartner found.

Another factor was that people are putting off replacing desk or laptop computers because they use them infrequently, opting instead to go online with smartphones, according to Kitagawa.

Despite market stagnation, she saw potential the PCs in business and gaming.

IDC analysts interpreted the latest figures as indicating PC growth that was beginning to stabilize as pressure on the market from smartphones and tablets eased.

”The fourth quarter results reinforce our expectations for market stabilisation, and even some recovery,” IDC vice president of personal computing tracker and forecasting Loren Loverde said.

”The contraction in traditional PC shipments experienced over the past five years finally appears to be giving way as users move to update systems.”

China-based Lenovo remained the leader in the global PC market, followed by US firms HP and Dell. All three increased their share of the market in the final quarter of last year,
according to both industry trackers. — AFP

Nowadays, majority of the PC performance are quite OK that they don't need to upgrade that often. I'm still using a 4 years old PC and without any performance issue that warrant for an upgrade.

last IT fair in midvalley these buggers try to sell me stuff and says atom or i3s are fast with 4GB ram and crappy ssd hdd. i show them when opening around a few windows\programs concurrently already the pc laggy like bobbies of 2 old aunties in a nudist beach

guess what, iphone sales fall too.

the world has become a much poorer place.

once technology has mature, the blue ocean strategy no longer works, and sales eventually fall. it's the natural order of things.

Few years ago PC components already very fast for average users that it doesn't warrant for upgrade. Even business have specialised app for iOS or Android for their employees which make PC less needed.

That's what I mean actually. Companies buy preinstalled PCs as they have technical support in case of breakdown. But they build them too good until breakdowns hardly happen. Thus no need to buy a new one.

I know about this because my company bought like 20+ HP PCs about 6+ years ago. And since then only 2 were spoilt - due to a lightning strike. The others still running smoothly using XP.....

the ultimate part is still the PC
as resolution grow, as internet speed getting faster
your PC also needs to be able to handle it
its like you're stuck with dual core but wanna play 2k youtube video..it will freeze your PC

plus u need to be able to do work, run office on your smartphone

I not sure about you ever notice it. Lot of small business or minor processes are using tablet now. (iPad or Android), rather than a laptop.

Last week just change maxis sims card. At first I tot they using laptop or some sort. End up they using iPad and they ask me to sign on the iPad.

damn, opening my excel file took quite some time
thn when i move something from a tab to another, the whole excel freeze thn crash laugh.gif

Gaming and workstation is still growing though at a slower pace. Could be saturation as well.

AMD is mostly in embedded now. Even Nvidia's main growth is from automobile and servers these days.

A typical case is most people still needs a pc or notebook but spends most of their time on phones and replaces phones much more often than their pc/nb.

Myself for instance has gone through 6 phones and 3 tablets since i last spent any money on my nb. Thats why PC shipments are dropping.

PC tech has already gone into very mature stage. Those hungry for new one most probably are gaming person. a normal pc can last for more than 4 years when some part faulty that easily can be replace like HDD, RAM, GC or PSU or even Mobo. Ppl don't get change whole PC unless part are not available in the market.

Phone is a bit different though. Mainly because the software is depending on the manufacturer. Most phone are not updated after 1 or 2 years.

A typical case is most people still needs a pc or notebook but spends most of their time on phones and replaces phones much more often than their pc/nb.

Myself for instance has gone through 6 phones and 3 tablets since i last spent any money on my nb. Thats why PC shipments are dropping.

make sense because smartphone lifespan isn't as long as a PC or NB

Computers are matured products..a pc from 5 years ago can do most things a brand new one can. 5 years ago we have unuseable cameras on smartphones and till today still meh though getting better.

Isn't it one of the reason because of sustainability?

It's like 5 years ago Corei7 still can pretty much perform daily tasks and some light gaming. So why need to change?

Still the depreciating usd does not help. I think can only get branded i3 (without dedicated gpu) + 24' monitor with RM2.3k or so hmm.gif
