dslrs have mirrors in front of the ccd unlike compact cams. it enables u to see what the lens sees,hence better composition. the mirrors prevent dslrs from having lcd preview but recent technoloy advances mainly in oly's e330 , panasonic's l1 and canon's just announced 1d does provide live view. on a personal note, i don think its tht necessary.
