Anyone still remember Wing Commander back in the 80s? Or Mark Hamill in Wing Commander III? Or maybe some remembers Ginger Lynn more than anyone else  . QUOTE EA Launches Wing Commander Arena onto Xbox LIVE Arcade

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS - News) today announced the return of its beloved Wing Commander™ franchise with Wing Commander Arena in development for the Xbox LIVE(R) Arcade(1). With up to 16 players, Wing Commander Arena offers the largest multi-player melee experience to date on Xbox LIVE Arcade. The game is scheduled to go live worldwide on the Arcade service in Summer 2007.
Wing Commander Arena is a fast-paced space combat game where players can team up to attack other teams of ships. The game introduces the classic franchise to an arcade-style experience that allows up to 16 players online in battle at once. Players can propel their customized ship through space, fire torpedoes and unleash deadly gravity bombs as they try to climb the leader board. Online players will compete for Frag count, high score and dueling stats.
"We're really excited to deliver unparalleled multi-player arcade action," said Chip Lange, EA Vice President. "The design for Wing Commander will appeal to both long-time fans of the franchise and immediately engage anyone who wants the melee style action of an arcade shooter."
Wing Commander Arena will feature four styles of play: single player, multi-team, multi-player free for all and multi-player duel. Within the game there are eight game maps that include team maps, free for all maps and dueling maps, so Wing Commander Arena offers a gameplay experience for every Arcade gamer, whether they want a quick ten minutes of action or a longer more immersive game.
Wing Commander Arena is produced and published by Electronic Arts and cooperatively developed with Gaia Industries. This is the second EA title for Xbox LIVE Arcade with EA's first title Boom Boom Rocket set to launch this Spring.

Aaaaah yes the good old days.....when i didnt have a console I had a....pc!!! Full motion videos with REAL actors, standard def only.....ahhh yes brings a tear to the eye.....  |

I played all the WCs! I remember being so betrayed when Hobbes was revealed, and so gutted when whats-her-frenchy-name dieded...
That was back when I was what, 12, 13?
I also remember back then, a sound card was like the latest thing 0.o

Anyway from the sound of it Arena is just figther combat, and that's it, no story, no cutscenes.
I'm sorry but after XWing and Freespace, the Wing Commander's space flight experience feels empty, I always played WC for the story and not the flight experience. so hopefully either they have a nice story or.. well they have battles on a large scale like freespace and Xwing series.

Yeah, Devereaux... Can't remember much of the story in the first place In any case, Origin back then used to be the EA (the irony of it now... haha). Loved the WC series, and Ultima, Privateer, Crusader... There was some real gaming goodness back then |

Here here, its good to see WC back int he game~! I think it was the game that made me buy that damn SoundBlaster card in the first place and propelled Creative Labs to stardom!

feeling nostalgic now...lol
i remember days of X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and the previously mentioned privateer...
hours and hours of wrestling with my Quickshot joystick on my 15" monitor...gaming was simpler and still 'funner' than those today...

IGN has gameplay movies and previews.
Looks like a 3D version of Asteroids, with multiplayer. Was hoping it would have at least full space combat engine. Instead it's just a shooter. Haihs..... EA.... EA.....

Hmmm.. interesting. Well, they didn't make a real space sim cause only a limited amount of people still play those. The game CAN still be a nice arcade VS shooter, we'll have to see how it plays when it's released lar.

initially i was really excited that they are doing a Wing Commander game on the 360 but after I got all the facts.... i think this just might put the last nail on the coffin for Wing Commander. Well at least there is hard core fans doing their own version on Wing Commander.
Wonder will you still get old timers like "Iceman" or "Maniac" or "Angel" as your co-pilots.
OT: Notice that the only bloke that make it to be a star was Harrison Ford. Mark Hamill @ Luke didt go far. Instead i think he floped XP

Just look up Mark Hamill in Wikipedia. It lists all the plays and voice over work he's done. The most famous of which as The Joker in Batman : Animated Series.

One thing that might be of interest is the history timeline. It has details from all WC series, including Privateer and some from the movie/books retconned into it.
