Hi.

I'm planning to upgrade my MBA Mid 2013 128gb to 256gb. I was wondering if I bought one online from oversea, is there any chance that the item being held by custom and got tax?

Depends on the courier service and how lucky you are. It is a very case by case basis. If customs get ahold of it, then you need to go to their location to negotiate with them. I done that with several car parts and managed to talk out of paying any tax.

is it the same for used parts? or does it only applies for new unused parts?

It applies for both as long as it is packaged up. I think it should be easier to show that it is a used part anyway or just claim that you had to send it overseas for repair.

Getting tough these days, I have an old MBA 2011 with 4Gb of RAM. Even with basic surfing and office applications it can be taxing on the laptop. Could always use with more RAM

My MBA is 2013 with 4gigs of ram and it still works great... use it for internet surfing and photoshop editing with bootcamp windows 10 as a secondary os... both macos and windows 10 works flawlessly... the only thing that i want to upgrade is the ssd from 128gb to a 256gb as I have been saving money to get one sometime in the future...

Have you try to a clean re-installation of the macos? You'll need to delete your entire boot drive... It will clear all the files that have collected in the system Library and the user Libraries over the years and which may be causing the Mac to run slowly... Remember to backup your important files to an external drive before you performing this...

Done all of that, still struggles with Lightroom CC and Photoshop CC as well as running larger excel workbooks.

Well that's sucks sad.gif ... That's the problem with current macbooks... there's no way to upgrade the ram once you bought them bangwall.gif , and the only thing that Apple allow us to upgrade on our own is the ssd..

Yes, regardless of the price, you will get taxed on 6% GST from the custom. If total price (including shipping) is over RM 500, then you are more than likely to get pounded with 30% import tax. That's just the general guide line and experience. Malaysia Custom can not be trusted and they dictate whatever the hell they want with taxes. Together with import tax and excessive shipping cost, you may find buying from local could be cheaper.
