QUOTE(limeuu @ Aug 15 2008, 12:10 AM) mods closed it for 2 days, but i think it should remain closed, as discussion was going off topic...... i just got back from supper..if you and i are not 'posting ur opinions around', then what are we doing in this forum??? anw, yeah..the previous should be closed... full of crap in the thread.. opps, sorry, of course we are here to post our opinions... QUOTE(blackrobin @ Aug 15 2008, 01:02 AM) nah... IMU takes in approximately 220+ students per intake..( many dare-to-fail people really fail ) yup..thats true...now MMMC only takes in around 120 students now.. so there's a healthy students to lecturers ratio the maximum allowed years to complete the MBBS program is 8 years and a student cannot retake a subject more than 3 times |

QUOTE(csrulez @ Aug 15 2008, 01:18 AM) AIMST is going to be a new medical university to receive JPA scholars too. We currently have a few in the latest foundation batch already. yup...agree with that..Besides that, i heard that AIMST is going to be one of the choices of uni for medicine in the upcoming IPTA application form for stpm and matriks leaver. Due to the lack of seats for med in IPTA. It seems that the PM is going to announce it soon on the upcoming official opening on this Sunday. Lol. We'll see. Anyhow, i was trying to say that 3rd world med schools aren't that bad at all. We still produce good doctors. But probably might lack in the consistency like what limeuu has said i guess. O.o aimst is coming up!! btw, limeuu, are u still working/practising?? |

QUOTE(csrulez @ Aug 16 2008, 12:21 AM) Hey munsheng and hypermax. im currently posted in surgical ward..there is one dr called dr king ban siang (if i remember properly), he is from aimst..Seriously you guys have seen my seniors? We only had a chance to catch a glimpse of them graduating when we first entered, sadly. Haha. I was wondering how are AIMST housemens doing there at MGH? I was told that our students kind of lacked in clinical exposure such as clinical procedures. Is it true so? They are our pioneer batch who works really really hard to help us obtain the 3 years recognition by MMC. Thanks to them really. to me , i think he is doing fine from what i observed la.. havent talk to him before.. in my opinion, its really up to the individual him/herself.. just be hardworking when u are posted in wards.. dun waste time and practise ur skills on patient.. skills (communication and examination)...communication is very important.. like hypermax has said, built rapport with the people ard u.. much easier to do things ard.. just dun piss them off.. |

well..
everyone has their way of doing things.. just have to be nice to patient and do it the right way(eg consent, gentle..) but im sorry to say sometimes i did go a bit too much... i think i need to do it coz some cases are hard to come by.. im pretty sure some of u did it before eg...when you stumble upon a very rare case, im pretty sure u are very eager to clerk and examine the patient, right?? but when performing venous cannulations, i will stop after my 2nd try.. same as drawing blood...if cannot find the vein, i will ask my friend to do it.. Yeah, so either they make it all post grad entry like the US, or all undergrad entry to ensure all students are on equal ground.

QUOTE(LadyVictoria @ Sep 4 2008, 03:20 AM) Hi guys! Just wanted to pop in and say hi! I'm going to be a medical student soon, on the 1st of October to be exact. I'll be heading to Bristol Medical School in England. Nice to meet you all! Hypermax: Melbourne University emphasises more on academic achievements while NUS takes interviews very seriously.(there are 2 or 3 interviews if i'm not mistaken). In fact, Melbourne University doesn't even interview its applicants for Medicine. I believe NUS is prone to take in whoever that are smart(not just academically)and citizenship shouldn't really play an important role.(but i could well be wrong) QUOTE(wgy589 @ Sep 4 2008, 06:09 AM) this is again hearsay. Nope, not a hearsay, but the truth. My brother (Malaysian) was top 10 in RJC, however, was rejected a place in medicine while those rank much lower than him got the offer (citizens). No matter wat, Spore still offers better postgrad opportunities to foreigners/foreign graduates as compared to UK, US, Aus. And they r tryin to increase postgrad posts to meet the target of GP:specialists ratio to 40:60. currently the ratio is the other way round However, it is true that Melb has less interviews than NUS. QUOTE(limeuu @ Sep 4 2008, 09:20 AM) we are talking about postgraduate training here....... With the same concept applied, why should SIngapore offer training posts to non-citizen? After all, they want to train their own doctors to treat their citizens.as for undergraduate intake into med school, of course, like all civilised countries, they take in and train citizens to provide health care for their own citizens......(unlike some other places).......but allocate a few places for full fees international students, which msias are....... remember, spore owes you nothing.......you are NOT a citizen .......... QUOTE(limeuu @ Sep 4 2008, 09:30 AM) eh.........don't you know they are always looking out for human talents?.......once you start work, you are quickly offered pr........then they will also offer you citizenship........if you want......... They can do the same thing for those undergrads. Why only post grads then?in case people don't know, 1/2 the doctors in mt eliz hosp are msians or ex-msians...... It is actually better for them to offer citizenship to those foreigners during undergrad years in NUS. They will tend to understand the health care system better as they will be spending many years in SIngapore. This post has been edited by munsheng: Sep 4 2008, 09:43 AM |

QUOTE(limeuu @ Sep 4 2008, 12:36 PM) cos it's cheaper to get somebody after he has trained himself........they know lots of msians chinese and indians pay a lot of money to study medicine at world class unis, and they just poach them when they graduate.......instant workforce without having to pay a cent, your parents pay, they reap the harvest...... True to certain extent, but then again, how many people studying in developed countries like OZ want to go to Singapore?it is costly to train a doctor, but at post graduate level, it's cheap, as the doctor undergoing postgraduate training is also working and providing service..... why am I explaining spore's strategy to you all?........ My brother studied in Singapore for 6 years, with all the education cost paid by Singapore gov. Yet NUS rejected him even though he is one of the best students in the country. So the end result is OZ gets a free doctor in about 6 years time, while Singapore looses a brilliant student, as well as the money paid to train him. Something wrong in Singapore's strategy?
