Hi.. i have a lot of mp3 files in my hdd. the problem is that some of them will corrupt after a long time. Those files that i play quite often will have no problem. every now and then i play some songs that i have not played for a long time, i will find some of them corrupted and can't be played. my hdd is in good condition. no other data or video files go corrupted. anyone knows why?

i encode my mp3 with lame encoder 160kbps via steinberg wavelab 5.0. play with windows media player 11. if the file can't be played by windows media player, i open it with wavelab, i will get a straight line which means total silence. which means wavelab can open it, but its total silence.

and btw, anyone knows any good looseless format that i can store my files? notworthy.gif

MP3 files and any other file cannot corrupt over time. There could be a problem with your harddrive. Or there may be some software that has altered the data on your hdd. Or you may have been infected with a virus.

Why don't you try opening the file with winamp and see if it works. Programs could corrupt over time due to setting changes, registry changes and conflicts. System files being deleted and so on.

There may be a program or virus in you HDD that causes MP3 files to be deleted or somekind of compression software running that compresses some inactive files including mp3 files and not uncompressing them properly when used.

Windows XP does automatically compress certain files if they're not used for a long time, right ? Perhaps this is one of the possible culprit..

the windows file compression is lossless process, just like zip, but provide transparent file access.
that would be a big problem if the compression is lossy. tongue.gif

I have a friend, he always turns on his external hard drive 24/7 and connected to the PC. When he off his PC, he never disconnect the external hard drive and sometimes he just pull off the cable until "Safely Remove..".

And he is getting the exact same problem with the TS.

Maybe you are on the same thing?
