Keep your hands dry, provides more friction between the barbell and your hands so you don't lose your grip.

Be careful there, some gym doesn't allow chalk as it messes up their place. Tat being said, does it only help in grip?

My gym exactly, the first year I lifted there. They made a big deal with me using chalk. So I made my own liquid chalk. I bought a block of chalk, crush them up into very fine powder, mix with 70% isopropyl alcohol (or equivalent, bought mine in caring pharmacy) in a squirt bottle, like those hand sanitizer bottles. Mixture is about 2-3 parts chalk powder with 1 part alcohol, you want a mixture that is a bit thinner than Colgate. Voila, liquid chalk, cheap and efficient. Quite troublesome though imo, gotta shake it all the time, can't apply on my shirt for squats, you risk spilling it on the floor, etc.

After I started lifting more, became friendlier with the staff, and actually compete, they stopped caring. They're just happy that I rerack my weights, I wipe down the barbell to clean off excess chalk and wear their t-shirt at events. I use a normal block chalk nowadays.

Does it help with grip? Absolutely. Once you got more than 120kg in your back for squats, if you don't have any chalk there and your shirt is wet from sweat, its very risky that it might slide down your back and fuck up your shoulders and elbows. If you bench competition style, without chalk you would slide backwards whenever you engage leg drive. When you deadlift with sweaty hands, it makes it impossible to hold on to the bar. I use chalk on almost everything that requires friction. I just hate sweaty hands because I have really sweaty hands and generally a very sweaty person. I change tshirt 4 times a session because it will be dripping in sweat.

What's a balk chalk? You mean chalk ball? Like the climbers use? I made one of those with chalk powder stuffed inside a long sock before. Personally I like it if I'm applying just to my hands.

In my case;
- Improve grip, more secure.
- Less callus formation compared to chalkless.
