Hello there,
I have a Camcorder which uses DV cassettes instead of a DVD or other recording media.
I would like to know is there anyway to convert/transfer them into the computer?

no, not usb.

usb is for transferring pictures. For video, you need firewire cable (and firewire port/card in your pc of course)

Depending on your machine, some sony machines do offer USB 2.0 streaming to transfer the tape. But the best is still using firewire.

You can get one at Sri computer, Low yat. Normally it's the 4-pin to 6-pin type. if you use pc with firewire card.

IF laptop normally you need to buy a 4-pin to 4-pin. It's RM 30 for a 3 meter cable.

Then u can download using softwares such as Ulead video studio or Adobe premiere. There's a capture option.

You want to covert DV format to AVI? I assume that you want to edit your video... If you only want to store them as in DVD or VCD then you dont have to capture the video in AVI format. Mpeg1 (VCD) or Mpeg2 (DVD) format will do.

Firewire... Does your PC comes with a firewire port? If not then you need a firewire card and only then you buy the firewire.

USB2.0 should be able to work depending on the capturing software. You can try out using some softwares first.

Most importantly, Check your camera first. What sort of video output connections does your camera has. Old DV cameras comes with Composite connections. Usually a cable with red, white and yellow connectors.
Then came cameras with Firewire ports. And now some new ones only comes with USB ports. So check your camera first.
If you are unsure, just google the camera model and look at the specifications......Video Output.

Good luck.
