Technical stuff for the day:

I found out that the bitrate for Astro's HD channel is variable 5-6Mbps (varies on scenes), with the peak of 10Mbps for certain scenes (e.g. fast moving scenes, dark/low light scenes).

And, Astro use HE-AAC audio codec (not the usual AAC LC codec) in 64kbps Stereo 48KHz and AC3 (Dolby 5.1) 384kbps 48KHz for HD channels. Don't let 64kbps disappoint you yet. HE-AAC codec is different than those old MP3 audio codec, it is designed for delivering good quality audio even at low bitrates. In other words, HE-AAC 64kbps has very identical audio quality compared to 128kbps MP3. Quite surprising to hear that 64kbps still deliver good quality on Astro HD channels, eh?

If you are an audio enthusiast (I'm one of it) and you watch Astro HD channels using headphones, oh yes, you will listen a little bit audio compression artifacts.

Don't want to listen to audio compression artifacts sound from HE-AAC 64kbps? Change the Digital Audio Settings on Astro box from Stereo to Dolby 5.1, so that you will be listen to AC3 (Dolby) 384 kbps audio codec, either to your home theatre system or TV (if your TV supports Dolby audio passthrough).

For SD channels, Astro still use MP2 audio codec (no typo there, not MP3, it's MP2) with the bitrate of 192kbps. Astro does use HE-AAC on selected SD channels. As for video, it is MPEG2, video bitrate, average 1.5Mbps on all regular channels. Sometimes, they use 5Mbps video bitrate for "certain channels".

How I found out this info, you ask? Hmmm... I manage to use a universal satellite receiver to record down one of a channel from Astro, then I analyse the video file using computer, and then all those video/audio technical stuff appears.
