Hello all. Am trying to seriously learn photography through casual attempts of snapping photographs - after busting an old Fujifilm S5000 and losing my Sony DSC W-500 (I think that's the model), I finally got a new Canon Ixus 850 IS recently.

Some of my older photographs snapped on my older cameras (hence the low quality on some of the pics) can be found here.

I'll only be selecting photographs I actually think are good to post up here - otherwise it'll just take too long to load.

On a recent trip my friends and I made to KL, we went to the Eye on Malaysia, among other places. Not many good pics imo save for the fireworks.


Had to crop this pic as there are plenty of heads blocking the bottom of the pic. :/

"Jailed" is underexposed... I know you try for lowkey photo, supposed to be dark, but is still under.

Hmm.. yeah now that you mention it, it's a little too dark. Maybe it's my camera's limitations (it's only a compact camera, anyhow) because I was using Manual settings, and I've set the exposure to +2.

..okay now that I've played around with my camera further, I realised I can adjust the shutter speed up to 15secs - but it was buried beneath other settings lol. -__-

nice concept on jailed. would prefer more composition on the fireworks keep it up!

Awesome angle for the Eye On Malaysia! Love how the EOM is dark and the fireworks and smoke color it (where it's usually the sky that is dark and the EOM lit up.)

I went to EOM again yesterday, but pictures weren't as nice because I was on manual mode tinkering about with the ISO and shutter speed - colours weren't emphasised, too bright, etc. However, when I begin to start snapping using the preset Fireworks scene built-in into my camera, the fireworks' colours are more pronounced - instead of the bright white light I got when I tinkered about with Manual (I hope this is understandable lol, else I can post pics up tomorrow to show =P).

Any ideas why this happened? >_> I'm not too sure I should rely on a preset Fireworks mode all the time without playing about with the ISO and shutter speed myself. The better fireworks pics I snapped on manual was with ISO 100 (or 80, I can't remember), 1.6secs.

I'm going out soon (bermahjong with friends ahaha) so the nicer pics I took of EOM will come tomorrow!

hrm..looks messy to me but i guess this would be personal preference u can shoot at 1.6 secs without a tripod??

haha of course not! My hands not that steady - I used a tripod for the fireworks hehe.

As for my previous question on why manual mode with manipulated ISO and shutter speed produced worse pictures than snapping on Fireworks mode, here are the two pictures:

Any ideas why the colours in Fireworks are more.. pronounced than me trying to manipulate the shutter speed and ISO manually? Has Canon done anything to this particular preset?

Yes, it appears that the Color Mode is set to Vivid in Fireworks mode. I love Canon's Vivid setting; it's always vivid but never overbearing. My Canon Powershot A520 is always set on Vivid.

Ah, that would explain it. Does a dSLR have all these presets?

Some of the pics I just posted I noticed are not appearing, as I forgot my blog disables hotlinking, lol - I've reuploaded them.

Yes, dSLRs have settings for sharpness, contrast and saturation. I have to say, Vivid on my Sony A100 doesn't look as pleasant as the Canon Vivid, perhaps because it's saturating a different set of colors differently.
