If done smartly can be pretty. My router is placed on the second floor, but I've got other TV & android box one floor below. I drilled the wall so that the network cable goes to the outside wall of my house then properly enclosed in cable case. The cable goes towards the wall below where it's drilled again exactly to my tv spot. So nothing bad visible inside the house. The only visible one is the canle case outside, if properly planned it can be not that bad.

You need the type that has a pass through power plug, then the performance will be better.

Also, don't trust the number on the box. You only get about 25% of the number on the box, so if you need fast LAN transfers, you're gonna need the AV1200 (which should get you roughly 300Mbps under super-ideal conditions).
