D1 is gear 1, D2 will let the transmission shift between gear 1 and 2 and no more.

It depends. If your car has enough power leftover then you can overtake with the current gear you're in.
Overtaking using 2nd gear is a bit over the top. Are you talking about overtaking in the highway or on the streets where the speed is around 60? Doesn't matter, using D2 is still too much. |

Does D2 is referring to 2 on the gearbox? Sorry for this foolish question. I'm also a NOOB.

D2 means it will shift no more than gear 2, D1 on the other hand locks on the 1st gear. as for overdrive off, it will engage no more than gear 3. thats for a typical 4 speed auto

im noob oso. got this question. when going down hill like genting road..will using L put more strain on the gear? and engine will rev high. will this cause high FC? or is it better to use D or free gear and brakes?

If you use D, you are letting the transmission to shift whatever gear it wants. It won't know you are going downhill, it sense no load and it shifts to a higher gear. You will go very fast down hill if you use high gears.
I think the revs are high when you go downhill in a lower gear because of the gear ratios. In lower gears, the output speed(the speed of the wheels) will be lower than the engine speed. However calculated backwards(from the wheel) the engine will rev higher than the wheel. This induces an engine braking effect. High FC doesnt matter. If you use brakes you can boil the brake fluids if you use it long enough and fast enough and your brakes won't work. NOTE: This is my theory only, I am open to any corrections. |

Rarely use D1 or D2, except going up to Cameron or Genting.

Not downhill using L will make your gearbox spoil easily? When i come down from genting i seldom use L i just use D and N free gear... but fast speed la..

L or 2 for downhill genting. this is to provide a drag or slow effect similar to brakes. if you go downhill with high gears, you will only strain on the brakes. the more they are strained, the hotter they get thus you will feel the brakes are not working well when its very hot as the disc and drums are so called melted or smoothen due to excess heat. prolong it, you will notice smoke coming out and continuously doing it will result in brake failure
going down hill with a lower gear as mentioned is exactly like stepping the brakes mildly to slow down. this means you will still can perform instant braking effect upon emergency without the brakes under perform. some new auto transmission comes with some gyro equipment. they will auto shift down instead of up upon going downhill. |
