Hi,

I’ve build a few gunpla models, did some basic detailing. I want to try painting them and I have a few questions regarding it.

1. I’ll be in the hobby for a long time smile.gif Is it better to invest in an airbrush set or is hand painting good?

2. Supposed the best way is to invest in airbrush set, what is the minimum amount I should spend for an airbrush set [along with the necessary accessories]?

3. Can I run/use airbrush for long period of time? If not, what can I do to increase the working time?

4. Are Tamiya Paints the best options for beginners? What other paints brands I can go for? Acrylics are safer, correct?

5. Do I need to prime all my models? I read that just washing the parts with soapy water and drying them would be enough. How true is this?

6. Are these steps correct?
Primer/Wash with soap water -> Paint -> Top Coat [Glossy] -> Panel Lining + Decals -> Top Coat [Flat]

7. I've seen video/read articles saying that you can use 91% Isopropyl alcohol to thin Tamiya Acrylic paint as they as similar to then thinner sold by Tamiya. Is this true?

As to practice, I might get a few SD or FG kits and try on them. And I’m just curious, what is the typical pricing for Tamiya paints?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

My apologies for the late reply. Was checking a few sites/videos etc regarding this. Thanks for taking the time to reply to each questions smile.gif I've decided to try hand painting first for now. I've a couple questions maybe you can help me with.

1) For the primer, what primers do you normally use? I was watching this video and realized that it might be helpful with my case [hand painting]. And what are the commonly used gloss black primer? I could find the vallejo primer online in malaysia but can't seem to find gloss black primer.

2) What brand of topcoat are good to get? Do we always need to spray topcoat? I've read some articles where they don't topcoat at all since it'll just be in display. Is this okay?

3) I noticed Tamiya has 10ml and 23ml paint pot. Which would be good to get? Is 10ml too little? Oh, and the difference between Regular Tamiya Color and Flat ones [Tamiya Black vs Tamiya Flat Black]. Is the Tamiya Black something like semi-glossy?

4) I've read that for Tamiya Acrylic is okay to use 90%+ IPA. Is that fine? And using hairdryer/fan to speed up drying process, is it okay?

5) And is it correct, if I'm painting normal color and shiny metallic colors, I should topcoat them separately [flat for normal color, glossy for the metallic ones]? Or do i just leave it?

6) Lastly, I'm just curious as to where to obtain those metal paint mixing trays, paint stirrer and dropper bottles.

Sorry for the questions, I'm almost all set to get all the items and start painting.

I read this website and this website.

Thank you again in advance.

EDIT:

Does anyone where to get paint supplies/gunpla etc in Ipoh, Perak? I know of Neo Plamo. Would appreciate if someone could point me to other shops as well. Or some online shops in Malaysia.

Thanks.
