The PlayStation Vita, also known as "PSVita" or "PSV") is the successor to the PlayStation Portable as part of the PlayStation brand of gaming devices. It is set to be released in Japan and parts of Asia on December 17, 2011 and in Europe and North America on February 22, 2012. The handheld includes two analog sticks, a 5-inch (130 mm) OLED multi-touch capacitive touchscreen, and supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and optional 3G. Internally, the Vita features a 4 core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor and a 4 core SGX543MP4+ graphics processing unit, as well as LiveArea software as its main user interface, which succeeds the XrossMediaBar.

The device is fully backwards-compatible with PlayStation Portable games digitally released on the PlayStation Network via the PlayStation Store. However, PS One Classics/TurboGrafx-16 titles will not be compatible at (Japanese) launch. The Vita's dual analog sticks will be supported on selected PSP games. The graphics for PSP releases will be up-scaled, with a smoothing filter to reduce pixelation.

Stay constantly connected to your games and friends with amazing apps on PS Vita.

Home Screen

user posted image

For the first time in many years, the Xross Media bar (XMB) is no longer the de facto user experience in a Sony gaming device. Gamers will need to adjust to Vita's new interface if they choose to purchase the console.

This touch-screen UI is a tremendous shift from the square smartphone standard, instead using bold, large circles. There seems to be more customizing potential, so it will be interesting to see how Live Area will evolve in future software revisions.

Some familiars are present in this collection of apps, and game icons seamlessly blend in with the rest of the OS. Wi-Fi and 3G signal strength appear very similar to the Apple iPhone and other modern smartphones. The home icon at the top indicates the current screen, while the icons to the right state what apps are open.

Users can have multiple pages of large circular icons. One cool feature is the ability to set wallpaper for each page individually. The blue circle with the number 5 on the top right is a button that opens a small sliver of status messages, voice chat invites, trophy updates, and so forth.

Index Page

user posted image

Another way to view content is the index view, which shows actively running apps.

LiveArea Screens

user posted image

user posted image

Each game on PS Vita will have its own LiveArea Screen, which is split into two zones. In the Info Zone you can find out about the latest downloadable content for the game you're playing, and see tournament events that are taking place. In the Communication Zone, see how your PlayStation Network friends are getting on through automatic status updates. You'll be able to see if they've earned a new trophy and leave comments for them, too. The LiveArea Screen is the best way to see what your friends are up to and let them know how well you're doing in your favourite PS Vita game.

Near

user posted image

Near is a core PS Vita feature composed of location based services that utilize PlayStation Network. Developed specifically for PS Vita, Near will be pre-installed on the system to let you find out what other PS Vita users in the area are playing right now or what they were playing recently, as well as what titles are the most popular in the area. What's cool is that thanks to the PlayStation Store having every title available, you can hop into the store, purchase the local favourite (data plan pending), and join in on the fun! You can meet friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing your game information across PlayStation Network.

Near also enables location based gaming features such as Gifting, where you can access virtual game-related items that others are sharing through checking in at geographic locations that others have also visited. The virtual items can include content unlocked from games, such as character costumes, weapons and treasures.

Unlike StreetPass, a Vita user does not necessarily have to pass by another fellow Vita owner to have a shot at getting a gift. The gift distributor goes about their daily routine in real life then syncs their Vita with a Near server to record where they have been. Should another Vita user pass through the same locations the distributor has visited, they can get gifts when their Vita syncs with a Near server. You'll receive a gift for every location the distributor passed through.

You can enjoy Near using Wi-Fi, but to get the most out of Near, a 3G connection is preferable. You will be able to obtain more information and encounter new players in real time by using a 3G connection + GPS.

Party

user posted image

Fancy a chat while you're gaming? Speak with your friends anytime you like with Party. The voice and text chat application will also be pre-installed and allows you to talk to up to eight party members, no matter what you're doing. Tell them about the game you're playing, what you're looking at online or hatch plans in multiplayer matches.

Your friends can even invite their own friends to join in the fun, so you'll meet more new people who love PS Vita as much as you do. Join an existing Party and see what everyone else is up to, or create your own and see who fancies a chat. Make sure you save your favourite Parties so you can head back there at any time.

Friends List and Profile

user posted image

In your profile you can share information about yourself. Choose an avatar that represents you best, add your friends and let the world see your gaming and trophy stats.

Your Friends List will allow you to search for and add new friends, and accept requests sent to you.

Click on a friend's profile to see what game they are playing on either PS Vita or PlayStation 3. You can join their game, take a look at what you've played together recently or compare your trophy collections. You can also see your friend's recent activity, check out if they've been to any Parties and view their Near profile.

Trophies

user posted image

PS Vita games will support trophies so you can show your friends what you've achieved in all of the great games on PS Vita and on PS3. Click on one of your friends' profiles to see how they've been getting on, and compare all of your trophies to see who the better player is. Has your friend got more trophies than you? Keep playing until you have the most.

PSN Message

user posted image

Another great way to contact your PlayStation Network friends is through PSN Message. Send them an update or even a picture you've taken with your PS Vita to let them know what's going on.

No matter what you're doing, you can always enjoy the amazing features of PS Vita. On the bus? Plug in your headphones and turn up your favourite tunes. Out with friends? Use the PS Vita system's built-in stereo speakers and let everyone join in the party.

Web Browser

user posted image

The PS Vita system's web browser is the perfect place to enjoy the internet. Surf the net, browse your favourite pages and type using the touch screen keyboard on the stunning 5 inch OLED screen. The Web browser will not support Flash out of the box, but could come in a future update. There will be support for HTML5 and Java, though. It seems that the browser could work well, as the back, forward, zoom, bookmark, and options are easily accessible on the right side. Rendering capability seems to scale Web sites accordingly with minimal resizing distortion.

Welcome Park is Vita's introductory software. It allows the user to get a feel of the Vita's capabilities through a variety of mini-games that force the user to use both touch panels, cameras, the gyro sensor, the microphone, and more. For all those trophy whores out there, yes, this includes trophies.

Transfer files from your Vita to your PC, and PS3 with this application. It's notable that almost all of the work with this will be done on the Vita, with minimal work being done on the PC or PS3. Please note, the software for computers at Japanese launch will not support Mac operating systems.

See how well Killzone 3 might play on the Vita via Remote Play in this demo from the TGS 2011 PS Vita Keynote. However, it's a feature on the PS3 side that must be included by developers and only certain games will support Remote Play on Vita.

Cross platform play feature is one of the best the PS Vita has to offer. Allowing you to pause the game you were playing on the PS3 and picking up where you left off on your PS Vita.

AD-HOC Multiplayer
PlayStation Vita running PSP software can face off in multiplayer battles! You can also transfer save data from PSP to Vita, and continue on your journey!

user posted image

PSP Backwards Compatibility
PlayStation Vita is fully backwards compatible with almost all PlayStation Portable titles released on the PlayStation Network. Sadly, as the device does not have a UMD drive, those titles that are UMD only will not be supported. For those who've purchased PSP titles on PSN previously, you can migrate all of your content onto the new device.

And Vita has an extra analog stick, and thanks to the Vita's backwards compatibility you can re-map buttons, and games fully patched can use the right analog stick like it was always there! Not only that, PSP games played on Vita will be subject to bilinear filtering and will look better than ever before!

user posted image

UMD Passport Program
If you own a lot of UMD games, for a fee you can transfer each of those UMDs into a PSN copy with the UMD Passport Program. Please note, not every PSP game was released on PlayStation Store, and not every PSP game on the PlayStation Store will be in the UMD Passport Program. Please check here for a full list of participating titles.

Thirteen products for PS Vita, including several memory cards, an AC adapter, USB cable, cradle, earbuds, protective screen film, memory card case, and several other pouches will be available in Japan on December 17. No word yet on when or how many of the non-essential accessories will be available elsewhere.
Three card slots exist on the Vita, including a PlayStation Vita, memory card, and 3G SIM card slot.

user posted image

The memory card is proprietary (unfortunately), and is available in 4GB (PCH-Z081), 8GB (PCH-Z081), 16GB (PCH-Z161), and 32GB (PCH-Z321) capacities.

user posted image

The cradle (PCH-ZCL1) for the PS Vita looks pretty slick, and sports a brush-gray aluminum facade on the front with a tilted angle for the Vita. It has a line-out stereo mini-plug in the rear.

user posted image

Sony is bringing a sharp-looking earbud headset (PCH-ZHS1) to the Vita mix. It features a 10mm driver with a built-in microphone that has a mute switch.

user posted image

There are also two different cases and a pouch for those who want to protect the $299 handheld. A fingerprint-proof protective film (PCH-ZPF1) will also deflect greasy fingers from soiling the 5-inch OLED screen.

user posted image

A PlayStation Vita card case is too, and it has a stylish transparent appearance with a smoked tint.

user posted image

Sony will offer two additional accessories next year: a portable charger (PCH-ZPC1) with 5,000 mAh capacity and a car adapter (PCH-ZCA1) for those wanting to keep the PS Vita topped up while on the go.

A: SCE do not have plans to introduce such peripherals at this point in time.

Q: Will you bring all UMD games to the new game medium or on the PlayStation Store for PS Vita?
A: SCE with the support of third party developers and publishers have been offering select UMD titles on PlayStation Store and will continue their effort to deliver these content in the form of game medium for PS Vita going forward. However, SCE will need to clear all copyright / legal related issues and due to this not all software titles will become available on PS Vita. SCE will announce details for each title when ready.

Q: Will PS Vita support all content that will become available on PlayStation Suite?
A: PS Suite content developed in the new game development environment provided for PS Suite can be enjoyed on PS Vita.

Q: Are PSP/PS3 user's PSN accounts also available on PS Vita?
A: The same PSN accounts will be available on PS Vita.

Q: Do you have any plans to introduce a video output cable? Will PS Vita have HDMI output?
A: No, PS Vita does not have a video output feature.

Q: Can you take out the battery from the system?
A: No. SCE has adopted embedded battery since PS Vita is equipped with a rear touch pad.

Q: Can PS Vita users use multiple PSN accounts?
A: No. PlayStation Vita will allow only one PSN account per unit. PSN account is tied to the hardware and the memory card, not just the card, which means that if a second person is using your Vita, it’s not just a case of switching out memory cards, it’s clearing out all of your saved data on the Vita itself when you do the factory reset.

Q: How do I enter PS Vita recovery mode?
    A.
    Recovery Menu

Turn OFF your PS Vita (Press Power Button for 10 seconds)
Now press and hold “R” + Power + PS (PlayStation Button)
    Wait…

    2. Rebuild Database
This can be a usefull feature if you have lost files on your system for no apparent reason. Try using this feature to see if it can restore those files. This will also rewrite corrupted files within the database, potentially eliminating future issues. This feature should not erase any of your saved data or settings.
Deletes messages, playlists, changes made on “Information” screens, trimming information for pictures in “Photo”, video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information. This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.

    3. Format the memory card
This will format the memorycard, effectively erasing all data currently on it.

    4. Restore PS Vita System
This will restore your system to original including, formatting and erasing all of the data on internal flash and returning all system settings to default. This will not take your system back to a previous Firmware release. Use this option as a last resort, unless you have nothing on the console that you want or you want to erase everything on the console, do not use this option.

The PS Vita's i see in the shops look different from my gundam breaker one. I think mine is the 2000 series.

Also, how much of a hassle is it to switch regions by memory card swapping? Mine is currently R1 but there's some newer cross play games i want on R3.

Hi smile.gif

Nyko power grip arrived today. Already plug in at ps vita 2k.
But, still blurry how this nyko power should operate.
Currently, battery at ps vita full but red blink2 at nyko power grip.
What that's mean ?. Feel annoying see flashing red.

That's a common problem. For me I experience it most often if I leave the Vita on sleep mode and return to it after a prolonged period of time. Usually when this happens, I'll do a force reset. However, if the problem is persistent (this happened to me A LOT when I was playing P4 Dance All Night), I did a format + restore, also made sure my firmware is truly updated. Ever since this, the blue screen of death hasn't been torturing me as frequent as before.

Btw, how new/old is your Vita?

maybe around 5yrs? hmm.gif

this problem only start occurring (quite frequently) recently...as far as i can recall....

and yes - it occurs usually after a prolonged period of time in sleep mode.
so what i do now is save the game before putting it to sleep.
or when i see the graphic defect start appearing, save & close the app. then re-open it back.

If you're able to get a save point I think it would do the Vita good to power it off completely. Probably the equipment is not as optimized as we'd like to think it is. Haha! Yes I do experience slightly weird graphic defects too prior to blue screen, sometimes the screen would tear, especially in World of Final Fantasy. Heck, it's annoying but doesn't provide me a good enough reason to get a new one. I wonder when will Sony announce a new handheld! rclxm9.gif
