Hello, need some suggestion from the Sifus here.

I'm currently offered a job and the company requires a Maybank account (which I do not have) for deposits of salary. I went to a Maybank branch and tried to open a new account and was stopped by the ticket no. guy telling me I need a letter of employment for the registration. Disbelieved, I left and called Maybank customer care multiple times and spoken to multiple personnel and they told me the same ans. Some guy told me to use a letter of support by the company to apply.

Talked to the HR ppl and seems they are unwilling to prepare the letter, and don't seems to believe me that you need a letter of employment to open a bank account.

So can anyone here help me??
1. Maybank's website don't even state its compulsory: https://www.maybank2u.com.my/mbb/m2uNOW/ope...ybankAccount.do which listed employment letter as highly recommended.

2. My friend told me EPF statement can be used, but Maybank told me no? (She opened with it in other bank before)

3. How do I proceed?

Thanks.

this is just crazy. have you tried enticing them with money? like lump sum investment.

I know BNM has been very strict when you open a savings account lately. wanted to close my cimb bank account and the guy say don't. hard to open later

Last year RHB also required employment letter. So I just showed them my Letter of Offer from the company and they accepted.

You mean they will not even accept the Letter of Offer from your company? Then like some suggested, ask them to call your HR to confirm.

Nowadays seems like banks don't want people to open accounts..
So hard to open now..
Previously so easy..
When I open time, don't needs any documents from schools, university or employer respectively... (Open in 3 different time of my life)

The HR from my company bounce the issue back to my recruiter when i request them to send me a letter of support to open the bank account. (both of them dont believe me that I need a letter of employment to apply for a banking account).

Yea, my current plan is to wait for my offer letter now (still waiting the HR side).

Why dont you just use the offer letter given by the company?
Maybank should accept that.

Many countries have tighten security on opening of bank accounts....esp after 911...some in UK/oz...

Msia used to be very easy...but from the sound of it, they are tightening...for new customers anyway....

I have no problem opening accounts with banks I already have a relationship with. ...

Nowadays, Maybank does not seem to welcome people opening savings accounts with them unless you are some kind of high net worth individual. Unemployed cannot open account, employed but no employment letter cannot open account, primary school student also need chop from school just to open an account? It is getting ridiculous.

Even for existing account holder who wants to open another savings account, it is not easy. They will ask you all kinds of questions and you have to justify your reasons for doing so to discourage you from opening another account. One would have to close his / her savings account with another branch if one wants to open another savings account in another branch. Kinda ridiculous if you ask me. Give them money also so difficult. doh.gif

They are getting arrogant because they think they are the biggest in Malaysia. Maybe they think the customers need them more than they need the customers. mad.gif They will usually blame everything on Bank Negara. I agree Bank Negara has tightened the rules to prevent money laundering but that does not mean it is Bank Negara's policy, rather it is that bank's policy or that branch's policy only in some instance. Otherwise, all the banks in Malaysia would have implemented the same policy.

Other banks like OCBC would be more than willing to open an account for its customers. They even volunteered to open new accounts for their existing customers. You can have multiple savings accounts in the same branch and it would not be a problem at all. But sometimes, it depends on the staff too.

I would suggest to try with a different branch unless they tell you cannot open in that branch because you don't live or work near that branch. Maybe can lodge a complaint with HQ too if you don't mind the trouble.
