Story for the first part is mostly the same, but the extra content is not bad.

And if you have your Pokémon from the original sun/moon. You can cheese through your way very easily to reach post game.

started playing Ultra moon, did feel like there's some slight difference. With all that said I have yet to even finish Pokemon Sun/Moon (I was playing Sun for a while).
Right now I am thinking to just stick with Ultra Moon.

I feel the ultra versions are what the original sun and moon should be.
The characters are more fleshed out. More variety of Pokémons and a solid post game.

I'm slowly progressing though. Still on the 3rd island.
As traded pokemon won't listen to me at higher levels, I'm doing a bit of breeding. HA blaziken and serperior.

It will just get better from there. haha

definitely another new region again *gasp* first and then hopefully a remake of the 4th gen

game freak is pretty consistent with every console jumps

ps: i can't keep up with 800+ pokemon anymore

Need some inputs from you guys -
Having played Pokemon 1st gen and 2nd gen (3rd gen briefly, don't think I finished it) as a kid, can somebody tell me what did I miss out on up till now?
I'm wondering how hard is it gonna be trying to catch up on all the new information for the most recent Pokemon game (ie, Ultra Sun/Moon).

No worry, is just like another new games. I played Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3, but stopped at Gen 4, 5 and 6, now I'm back with Gen 7 (SuMo/UltraSuMo)

Gameplay wise, it's similar but with a lot of new additions.
Shouldn't be difficult at all to keep up.

I used to play on smogon during gen 3 many years ago then I quit till Gen 7 too.
Didn't take me long to get used to everything.

Is it still as tedious as those days in terms of level grinding and required gameplay hours?
With more life responnsibilities as we grow up, I couldn't see myself spending that much time into the game

Nope.
Things are a lot better now.
You get exp share pretty early on.
The pokedex in UM/US gives you exp bonuses sometimes.

No more HM slaves.
No more tedious EV training. (if you're into it)
TM have multiple use
Breeding is easy. (if you're into it)

I play it during my commute back from work.
About 30 mins a day.
I finished the game in less than 2 months.
