Bangladeshi fishermen claim Myanmar navy attacked trawler

user posted image

DHAKA: Four Bangladeshi fishermen were injured when Myanmar's navy allegedly opened fire on them while they were fishing along the countries' troubled border in the Bay of Bengal, an official said Wednesday (Dec 28).

A group of 14 fishermen, four of whom have been hospitalised with bullet wounds, told coastguard officials that a Myanmar navy ship had entered Bangladeshi waters and opened fire on their trawler on Tuesday.

"They said the navy ship started firing on them without any warning," coastguard officer Saiful Absar told AFP by phone from southern Saint Martin's Island, which is close to where the alleged incident happened.

"Four fishermen were injured. They had bullet wounds all over their hands and feet," he said, adding they had been taken to a hospital in the coastal district of Cox's Bazar.

The coast guard is investigating whether the Myanmar Navy had intruded into Bangladesh's territorial waters, he added.

user posted image

The incident comes as tensions along Bangladesh's southeastern border with Myanmar's Rakhine state run high, after Myanmar's military launched a massive crackdown on Rohingya Muslims in October.

Myanmar's army says it is hunting militants behind deadly raids on police posts.

But Rohingya survivors have described rape, murder and arson at the hands of soldiers - accounts that have raised global alarm and galvanised protests around Southeast Asia.

More than 34,000 Rohingya have since fled to Bangladesh, which has deployed extra border guards to prevent a large-scale influx of refugees.

Thousands of the fleeing refugees have been sent back to Myanmar by Bangladeshi border guards.

user posted image

More than 230,000 Rohingya already live in Bangladesh, most of them illegally, although around 32,000 are formally registered as refugees.

But Dhaka is wary of accepting more Rohingya fearing it would encourage the Buddhist-majority country to push more of the stateless minority into densely populated Bangladesh, amid growing local resentment over the new arrivals.

user posted image

Amnesty International has said Myanmar's military has committed atrocities against the minority group which are tantamount to "crimes against humanity", while Human Rights Watch published satellite images showing hundreds of burned down houses in Rohingya villages.

How the SAF's combat boots have evolved over the decades

The waterproof Gore-Tex material kept muddy water from entering the boots, a common complaint among soldiers out in the field as water got trapped inside while crossing river obstacles or staying in the rain for a prolonged periods.

The outsole was also suitable for jungle operations.

FRONTIER NYLON-FABRIC BOOTS (2012-2016)

user posted imageWeight: 705g

The SAF-customised Frontier boots were hailed as being lighter, safer and more comfortable for soldiers when they were introduced in 2012, with the SAF studying more than 20 models over three years.

They consisted of a leather upper, a polyurethane midsole, and a rubber sole.

Among the improvements: two perforated holes on the inner side of each boot to drain out water, a new outsole design for better agility to move in the confined spaces of urbanised areas and nylon material that dries up within an hour when wet.

The boots were also said to transmit up to 20 per cent less shock to the feet.

ARMY COMBAT BOOT (ACB) AND ENHANCED COMBAT BOOT (ECB)

user posted imageWeight: 900g (ACB) or 700g (ECB)

The ACB, which is designed for durability, will be constructed with directly moulded soles, while the ECB - for active manoeuvre units like infantry, commandos and guards - will have a fully stitched cupsole.

The ACB comes in two models - Peruvian brand Wellco Peruana and US brand Altama - and they have synthetic breathable material that allows quick drying, as well as a sole suitable for jungle use.

The ECB, made by US brand Magnum, has an outsole that can be used in both jungle and urban terrains.

Indonesia reconsiders further acquisition of BTR-4 APCs after early trials

Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
28 December 2016

Key Points

• Indonesia has concluded a series of initial training activities on the BTR-4 amphibious vehicle from Ukraine
• Plans to acquire further vehicles is now being reviewed after encountering a number of teething issues

The Indonesian Marine Corps (Korps Marinir: KORMAR) has concluded initial training activities on its BTR-4 8x8 amphibious wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APCs), but is now reconsidering further acquisitions of the vehicle, a service official told IHS Jane's on 27 December.

The reconsideration follows KORMAR personnel reporting a number of issues with the platform during its initial training activities.

These included situations in which the APC is trimmed excessively by the bow when operated at full speed in the water.

Two killed after National Guard's AH-64 Apache helicopter crashes off Texas coast

user posted image

QUOTE
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Two people were killed on Wednesday when an Army Air National Guard helicopter crashed into waters near the Bayport Cruise Terminal in Texas, military officials said.

The cause of the accident, some 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Houston, was not yet known. The names of those killed have not been released.

The helicopter crash did not affect navigation in the Houston Ship Channel, which links the busiest U.S. petrochemical port to the Gulf of Mexico, the Houston Pilots Association said.

i still got 1 pair made by Sepatur Timur long time no wear, but i think cannot wear as the glue might be harden and will spoil easily  biggrin.gif
i also buy the zip attached to easy boot wear

They aren't as durable or hardwearing as full-leather or synthetic-material boots. The OD canvas top especially will fade and rot quite fast if it gets wet regularly.

But by god are they comfy to wear in the jungle.

That time when a Singapore Navy submarine caught a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier off guard

It has long been rumored that a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier group was successfully tracked by a Singapore Navy submarine in South China Sea. The photo of the carrier coming into the periscope sights has now surfaced in a video by the Republic of Singapore Navy.

A sea-sickness inducing amphibious mission, a bumpy helicopter ride and a fast-paced urban assault kept the troops on their toes and tested their teamwork and fighting spirit.

More than 2000 troops from the Singapore Armed Forces and the Australian Defence Force took part in a complex and massive joint exercise that also involved an array of land, air and sea assets at the Freshwater Bay Training Area in Queensland, Australia.

Japanese Coast Guard vessels to be handed over to MMEA during LIMA '17

The Japanese Coast Guard will hand over one of the the offshore patrol vessels it had agreed to transfer to the Malaysian Maritime enforcement Agency (MMEA) during LIMA '17 military exhibition show early next year. The other patrol vessel will be handed over shortly after. Japan will also bear the costs of cleaning and refurbishment of the patrol vessels prior to the handover.

The two 1,000 ton-class patrol vessels, JCG Erimo (PL-02) and JCG Oki (PL-01) high endurance patrol vessels are being transferred to the Malaysians to upgrade its own patrol capabilities in the South China Sea. While both vessels were commissioned in the lathe 1980s and early 1990s, the vessels remain capable of conducting long patrols, in excess of 3,000 kilometers. These vessels are set to be the largest and most capable vessels the MMEA will currently operate. Both vessels will also be able to operate helicopters from their landing decks.

The South China Sea region has been in high tensions recently, with the underlying maritime territorial disputes there heating up as Beijing has started construction of military-capable installations on the islands it claims as it own in the South China Sea.

The vessels will be stationed each in Kuantan and Kota Kinabalu.

Why nowadays every so often sure got new assault rifle tech like SCAR, ACR or whatnot coming out. On the other hand why so rare to see significant new infantry machineguns tech coming out? See squad brand new rifles but still carry MGs designed in the 1950s like FN MAG or M60.

Indonesia receives a further 16 Leopard 2 RI main battle tanks

Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
30 December 2016

The Indonesian Army (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Darat: TNI-AD) has taken delivery of another 16 Leopard 2 RI (Republic of Indonesia) main battle tanks (MBTs).

The vehicles, which are part of a contract for 61 MBTs of the type with Rheinmetall Defence, were unloaded at the Port of Tanjong Priok's vehicle-handling terminal on 28 December, said its operator, PT Indonesia Kendaraan Terminal.

According to an IHS Jane's report from September 2016, Indonesia had by then taken delivery of 24 Leopard 2 RI MBTs. Unloading of this latest tranche in December brings the number of tanks delivered to 40.

The TNI-AD is expected to receive its final tranche of Leopard 2 RI MBTs by March 2017.
