China flies nuclear bomber over South China Sea to 'send message' to Donald Trump

user posted image

QUOTE
China has flown a nuclear-capable bomber outside its borders in a show of force for the first time since US President-elect Donald Trump’s phone call with the president of Taiwan.

The 10-minute telephone call with President Tsai Ing-wen was the first by a US president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of ‘One China’. It led to protests from Beijing.

The Xian H-6 bomber flew along the disputed 'nine-dash line' around the South China Sea on Thursday, US officials told Fox News, passing over a number of disputed islands. The officials said it was designed to send a message to the incoming administration.

The Pentagon found out about the flight on Friday and officials said it was the first long-range flight along the demarcation line in more than 18 months – though this sortie extended further than previous ones.

The H-6 is the Chinese version of the Russian Tupolev Tu-16 jet bomber and has been used by China to drop nuclear devices in tests.

Mr Trump has used Twitter to criticise Beijing's policies, including the build-up of “a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea”.

ISIS Retakes UNESCO Heritage Site Palmyra—So Where Is Putin’s Army Now?

user posted image

QUOTE
So far, over the course of a 72-hour blitzkrieg, ISIS has retaken the strategic mountain perches of Jabal al Tar and Jabal Antara, overlooking Palmyra, as well as the northeastern and western neighborhoods, all of the oil and gas fields northwest of the city, a military warehouse and another military installation. The terror army entered the city center on Saturday, where it continues to clash with those remaining regime forces. It may have also downed a Syrian MiG-23 fighter jet
QUOTE
an archaeologist from Palmyra who now lives in Turkey but keeps in contact with both opposition and regime sources, estimates that about 50 percent of the city has fallen to ISIS. The Assadists still control Tadmor airport, a military intelligence headquarters and Tadmor Palace
QUOTE
He said that a mere 50 to 60 jihadists were currently besieging Palmyra, which now contains as many civilians but around 1,000 Syrian army personnel and between 1,500 and 2,000 pro-Assad militiamen.
QUOTE
pro-Assad militia built and trained by Iran. "The NDF had over 800 men posted around the straetgic Shaar gas field and the other areas, in addition to around 250 regular soldiers, the source said. "They had maintained defensive positions for the last 6 months. In August, operations had been stopped. When ISIS attacked days ago they retreated and left most of the heavy weapons without a fight. In the panic, over 100 were killed or are still missing. Word is that a senior NDF commander who was stationed around Shaar was bribed by ISIS. It is not the first time this has happened. A decision was made to prevent the city falling at all costs."
QUOTE
Analysts such as Middle East Institute fellow Charles Lister and researchers at the Washington, D.C.-based Syrian Institute estimate that Assad’s only got about 20,000 reliable regular army soldiers nationwide. Over two-thirds of his hodgepodge coalition consists of sectarian militias of various nationalities led by warlords and trained up by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, if not “advised” by Russian commandos. Lebanese, Iraqi, Pakistan and Afghan Shiite jihadists are known to do the heavy lifting on behalf of Damascus.
QUOTE
ISIS appears set on marching on the T4 airbase, Syria’s largest, where the regime keeps two fixed-wing attack squadrons, of Su-24 and of Su-22 fighter jets, as well as a fleet of helicopter gunships.

New Wireless Sights Show U.S. Soldiers Exactly Where Their Machine Gun Fire Will Hit

New tech will let soldiers shoot machine guns via helmet mounted displays.

user posted image

user posted image

The U.S. Army will begin production on a new generation of weapon sights designed to allow soldiers to engage the enemy while staying under cover. The Family of Weapon Sights—Crew Served (FWS-CS) program links troops to heavy weapons with wireless technology.

FWS-CS is a long-wave infrared night vision scope that is installed on a M2 .50 caliber machine gun, Mk. 19 grenade machine gun, or M240 machine gun. The scope is boresighted to the weapon, meaning aligned with the weapon's barrel. The Army has been installing night vision scopes on guns for a long time, so that part isn't a big deal.

The big deal is that the scope has a 12-micro thermal and high-definition day camera wirelessly linked to a helmet-mounted display worn by the gunner. The display projects onto the wearer's field of vision showing where the bullets—or grenades—will impact.

The result is that soldiers can acquire and engage targets much more quickly. Instead of looking down the sights of the gun and adjusting, they can get a good grip on the weapon, use the reticle to zero in on the enemy, and open fire. The sight also has a zoom capability, which will aid in identifying a target at long ranges.

Projectiles such as bullets and grenades gradually lose velocity at longer ranges, as gravity inevitably takes over. At 1,200 yards, for example, a .50 caliber bullet drops 86 inches due to gravity. At shorter ranges—say, 500 yards—the difference in elevation between the barrel of the gun and the sight means the bullets will strike about too 86 inches too high. You can see where the problem lies. Both distances are greater than the height of the average person, so it's entirely possible to miss your target if you're not careful.

FWS-CS, on the other hand, uses a laser rangefinder to instantly calculate the distance to the target and whether or not to adjust the shooter's aim up or down. Thanks to the infrared sight, it is equally accurate in day or night conditions.

Yet another advantage: the wireless aspect means the soldier doesn't have to position himself directly behind the gun to fire. After all, if the gun can shoot at the enemy, the enemy can shoot at the gun—and the shooter behind it. It is entirely possible that, so long as he or she has a good grip on the weapon, the shooter can actually duck down behind cover or inside an armored vehicle and pull the trigger, relying on the helmet mounted display to aim.

FWS-CS was scheduled to be in the Engineering and Manufacturing Phase between January and March of this year, and should enter the Production and Deployment Phase—where it actually reaches the troops—very soon.

Military Situation In Syria After Liberation Of Aleppo (Maps)

QUOTE
Militants that ingored a proposal to withdraw from the southeastern part of Aleppo city last night, retreated to an area north of Ramouseh.

It’s metter of hours when they will be purged by government forces.
QUOTE
Before launching new full-scale operations, the Syrian military and its allies will need to regroup, resupply and rotate their forces and to improve security of the Aleppo countryside.

Then, government forces will have next goals and priorities:

* to take back Palmyra;

* to seize miltiant-held pockets near Homs and Damascus;

* to advance on Idlib;

The advance in the direction of al-Bab also looks not likely because this could lead to full-scale military confrontation with the Turkish Armed Forces. However, the Syrian government can decide to provide some assistance to Kurdish YPG forces clashing with pro-Turkey militant groups in the area.

QUOTE
The German Air Force has received its first upgraded A400M Atlas military transport aircraft from Airbus Defense and Space.

According to Airbus, the tactical upgrades include improvements in airdrops, paratrooping, and self-defense. The planes can also fly as low as 150 feet above the ground, and operate as a tanker for other aircraft.

"There is no other aircraft in the market with the A400M´s combination of tactical and strategic capabilities and it is going to transform Germany's air mobility force," Rossner added.

The company markets the A400M as the world's most versatile airlifter, capable of carrying payloads weighing up to 37 tons. Alternately, the plane can carry up to 116 troops.

Why do Iran's conservatives oppose deals with Boeing, Hyundai?

QUOTE
Iran’s national carrier Iran Air and US aircraft manufacturer Boeing signed a $16.6 billion deal for the sale of 80 passenger jets Dec. 11, despite strong opposition from the US House of Representatives.
QUOTE
With the goal of renewing its aging fleet, Iran will import Boeing airplanes, including 50 narrow-body 737 MAX aircraft and 30 long-haul 777s. Boeing said that deliveries will begin in 2018.
QUOTE
Sobh-e No, a daily close to the Principlists, highlighted a Boeing statement that stressed the deal “will support tens of thousands of US jobs directly associated with production and delivery of the 777-300ERs and nearly 100,000 US jobs in the US.” Sobh-e No covered the agreement under the headline “A deal to create 100,000 jobs in US.”
QUOTE
Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Naghdi, the cultural deputy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). According to Fars, Naghdi said, “They [the Rouhani administration] had promised to force the United States to return the $2 billion they owe us [as part of Iran’s frozen assets in the United States], but now they have poured another $16 billion in their [Americans’] mouths.”
QUOTE
On Dec. 9, the official IRNA news agency reported that Iran’s state-owned shipping company finalized an agreement with South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries for a $650 million order of container ships and tankers. Hyundai Heavy Industries is the world’s largest shipbuilder by revenue, and this is Iran’s first deal to modernize its fleet since 2006.
QUOTE
Abdollah Abdollahi, the head of Khatam al-Anbiya Construction Headquarters — the main economic arm of the IRGC — as stressing that the deal contradicts Rouhani’s promises to reduce the unemployment rate in Iran. Under the headline “Don’t give it to Koreans, we can do it ourselves,” Kayhan said, “It is alarming that despite having millions of unemployed youths in the country, the government gives away all our [economic] capacities to the sworn enemies of Iran.”

U.S. Navy test fires Raytheon SM-6 missile at sea

user posted image

PACIFIC MISSILE FIRING RANGE, Hawaii, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy fired two Raytheon-built Standard Missile-6 missiles to intercept incoming medium-range ballistic missile targets during a recent flight test.

The Standard Missile-6, or SM-6, is designed to intercept short-range and medium-range attacks at sea, and replaced the SM-2 Block IV missile. Raytheon officials say the test was conducted to demonstrate the weapon's versatility.

"This test showcased the flexibility of SM-6 by providing both anti-air warfare and ballistic missile defense from sea," Raytheon Missile Systems president Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence said in a press release. "Combined with its anti-surface warfare capabilities, the SM-6 will play a significant role in protecting U.S. and Allied forces at sea and ashore."

The test was part of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency's Sea-Based Terminal Program, which aims to bolster ballistic missile protection using maritime platforms. The SM-6 missiles used in the test were integrated into the Aegis missile guidance system.

In addition to incoming ballistic missile threats, the SM-6 is also designed to engage rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as surface targets. The Dual I variant used in the test achieved initial operating capability in 2016 following a successful flight test in August 2015.

Aleppo rebels: We'll leave 'wearing explosive belts'

QUOTE
Kareem said that the fighters were preparing to leave Aleppo, following the evacuation already of about 25,000 people from the formerly rebel-held east of Syria’s largest city.

“This is an explosive belt. This is what a lot of the fighters are wearing because they don’t feel that they can trust the regime to keep its word that they will have safe passage to leave,” said Kareem.

“If they are stopped they are prepared for a fight.”
QUOTE
Middle East Eye contributor Zouhir al-Shimale, who was evacuated on Monday, said that the bus on which he was travelling passed through checkpoints controlled by Russian and Iranian forces and by the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.

He said Russian soldiers climbed onboard buses to inspect whether evacuees had weapons with them.

“They were saying you can go back to the regime side and no one will harass you or arrest you but no one listened to them. People were just silent and we moved to the western countryside and no one got hurt or arrested."

‘This is militarization’: We finally know what China’s mysterious hexagonal structures in the South China Sea are for

user posted image

QUOTE
WASHINGTON, DC — The mysterious hexagonal facilities the Chinese began installing on man-made islands in the South China Sea appear to be anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems, according to the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI), a unit of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

In August, AMTI published satellite imagery of several unidentified hexagonal structures on Fiery Cross, Subi, and Mischief reefs.

The formations are always oriented toward the sea and started to appear in May, according to experts at AMTI.

“More recent satellite imagery suggests that these hexagonal structures are point defense systems that are designed to defend the land features and the assets on them from an attack,” Bonnie Glaser, senior adviser for Asia and the director of the China Power Project at CSIS, told Business Insider.

What’s more, Glaser notes that China is building these structures on all seven of the islets and reefs it occupies in the Spratly Islands.
QUOTE
“This is the first time that we’re confident in saying they are anti-aircraft and CIWS (close-in weapons systems) emplacements. We did not know that they had systems this big and this advanced there,” Poling told Reuters.

“This is militarization. The Chinese can argue that it’s only for defensive purposes, but if you are building giant anti-aircraft gun and CIWS emplacements, it means that you are prepping for a future conflict.”

Glaser echoed Poling, telling Business Insider, “although these systems are intended for self-defense, it is hard to argue that they are consistent with Xi Jinping’s pledge to not militarize the islands.”

Here’s How A Warship Crew Eats In The Middle Of A Fight

QUOTE
The Danish navy’s 455-foot frigate HDMS Peter Willemoes carries heavy artillery guns, missiles and machine guns to protect convoys and patrol dangerous waters. It also has 160 souls aboard, with a very efficient cafeteria to keep them fed even while the vessel is taking fire.

In this segment of the Smithsonian Channel’s Mighty Ships, we get a glimpse at what a military mealtime looks like in the midst of a critical situation. I’m sure you wouldn’t catch these sailors bailing out in the middle of doing something like extinguishing a fire to grab a snack, but at a certain point, people are going to lose effectiveness without sustenance.

When people have to eat, the Willemoes has Logistics Officer “Klaus” and his team of cooks (who get 74 minutes to prepare food) feed the entire crew, clean the kitchen and return to their own battle stations.

Klaus breaks the sailors into three groups to get them all through a buffet. Each sailor gets six minutes to eat dinner before being cleared out for the next wave.

While what we’re seeing in this video appears to be an exercise rather than actual combat, it’s a pretty impressive display of efficiency. And here I was thinking I had skills lapping up cereal straight from the bowl so my hands could stay free to type.

Chinese special forces seek anti-terror training in Chechnya

Chinese special forces want to be trained in tackling suicide bombers at a private institute in the Chechen city of Gudermes. Moscow is presently studying the proposal.

user posted image

QUOTE
China has requested the Russian government to allow its special forces to be trained in anti-terror measures at a private institute in Chechnya.

The Security Council of Russia and the Russian Foreign Ministry are studying the proposal, Daniil Martynov, head of the privately run Chechen International Special Forces Training Center in Gudermes said.

He added that the Chinese military approached the center at the Annual Warrior Competition in Jordan, where a Chechen division won first place.
QUOTE
“It was an interesting experience” because the Chechen and Chinese units operate under different conditions, Martynov said. “We have extensive experience in the field of identification of suicide bombers in public places and dealing with suicide belts. The Chinese have developed effective systems to prevent the use of bladed weapons. It is also useful to us, and we will implement this experience.”
QUOTE
The center, which is backed by private investments and gets no government funding, is the brainchild of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. In November 2016, Kadyrov said he was looking for foreign instructors, including some "tough guys" from the U.S.
