she can, there is special visa for indonesian diaspora

dual nationality law still on process, but its slow progress

Jokowi himself seems Pro on dual citizenship but the parliament and people still pros and cons, I'm on pro side, the aim is to "take" back our diaspora. Currently, we have limited dual citizenship, only applied for children from mixed nationality parents until the age of 18-22 maximum, after that they must choose one passport.

Singapore doesn't allow dual citizenship either, so I don't think they will able to keep their indonesian citizenship unless they willingly renounce their SG citizenship

just a quick question:

why assault rifles typically have 30 rounds max? why not 40? why not 50?
Then some got 20 rounds? i mean is that enough for heated battles??

i admire the germans last time in WW2. Their MP40 got 32 rounds, extra 2 round.

Even 30-round mag isn't advised to load to full capacity. The spring pressure of the follower can push bullets too hard into the chamber, causing double feed jams.

Those large-capacity mags are even worse, they are more prone to jam due to the mechanism or the fact that there's too many bullets in there. If the mag jams, you essentially will lose the entire remaining ammo load of the mag until you can clear it or you load a new magazine. If use lower capacity mags at least not that much wastage if that happened.

During the South African border War, SADF soldiers will frequently find dead Angolan communist soldiers with jammed RPK drum magazines that they liked to use with their AKs.

Experienced soldiers will load around 27-28 bullets in a 30 round mag to reduce chance of jamming. Some even load 25 bullets only.

Balance between weight, encumbrance and utility really.

20 round are you thinking of the SLR? It fires 7.62mm NATO which is bigger and significantly heavier. 1 of the few downsides to the AK47 (which fires a shorter 7.62mm round) is the weight and length of the magazine, which makes it harder to fire prone.

You must love the Soviet Ppsh41 then. 71 round drum bruce.gif

Polish “Twardy” Main Battle Tanks Headed to Latvia

PUBLISHED AT: WEDNESDAY, 23 NOVEMBER 2016, 10:39

user posted image

Jakub Palowski

Antoni Macierewicz, Polish Minister of Defence, announced that the Polish Army is going to deploy a company of the PT-91 Twardy main battle tanks to Latvia. The vehicles in question are to become a part of the battalion group stationed there.

During his visit to Israel, the Polish Minister of Defence confirmed the fact that the PT-91 Twardy main battle tanks are to constitute the core equipment of the company which is expected to become a part of the battalion combat team, the presence of which is maintained by NATO within the territory of Latvia. The aforesaid joint unit is going to be commanded by the Canadians, and it is to involve, besides the Poles, soldiers hailing from Italy, Albania and Slovenia as well.

PT-91 Twardy main battle tanks are a deeply modernized variant of the T-72M1 platform, developed and manufactured by the Polish defence industry. They have been fitted with the new ERAWA-1/2 reactive armour, Drawa fire control system (including Drawa-T system with a FLIR sight), improved S-12U powerpack (850 HP), and Odra laser warning receiver.

PT-91 tanks have been developed at the Bumar-Łabędy facility, both as vehicles manufactured from scratch, as well as in a form of modernized T-72M1 tanks. As the first platform used within the Polish Army, Twardy tanks have been fitted with thermal vision observation systems. The tank has also received the enhanced protection offered by the reactive armour system, which keeps the crew safer from the anti tank weaponry, also from the weapons that are using the tandem warheads, at least to some extent.

When Drawa fire control system was being developed, experience and expertise gathered during the R&D works implemented by the Polish defence industry, related to the Merida FCS for the T-55AM tanks, modernized back in the 1980s, has also been taken into account. Similarly to the Obra system, the solution mentioned above has been delivered by the PCO company.

PT-91 tank’s disadvantages included lack of accuracy, when the cannon was being fired on the move, due to the fact that obsolete stabilizer unit has been applied within the turret. Another disadvantage has been seen in relatively weak mobility (acceleration dynamics or low speed in reverse, making it more difficult to carry out defensive manoeuvrers).

After the process of introducing the Leopard 2A4 tanks into the inventory of the Polish Army (with the 2A5 platform to follow) was finalized, the modernization, regarding the upgrades of the T-72M1 tanks up to the PT-91 standard, has been completed too. Soldiers of the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade, the first users of the Leopard tanks, when they compared the new platform to the Twardy vehicle, mentioned, above all, the accuracy of the rounds fired on the move or manoeuvrability of the German tank, as the main advantages Leopard had, over the Twardy platform. Leopard tanks have much more effective base armour at their disposal too. The German vehicle is also tailored to be used as a hunter-killer platform, with independent targeting system for the commander available.

PAKISTAN POSSIBLY RE-INTERESTED IN OPLOT-M MAIN BATTLE TANK

With Pakistan reviving industry ties with Ukraine, specifically with the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB) and Malyshev Factory, could the Pakistan Army be re-interested in the Malyshev Factory Oplot-M main battle tank (MBT)?

The Malyshev Factory Oplot-M was among the armoured combat vehicles exhibited by Ukroboronprom, Ukraine’s state-owned defence industry dealer, at the 2016 International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS), which took place last week in Karachi, Pakistan. The Oplot-M was among the tanks the Pakistan Army evaluated as part of its Haider program in 2015.

During IDEAS, Pakistan’s state-owned armoured vehicles manufacturer Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) inked a memorandum-of-understanding (MoU) worth $600 million U.S. with Ukroboronprom for the provision of 200 diesel engines for al-Khalid 1 MBTs and other heavy armoured related support (e.g. possibly upgrading the Pakistan Army’s T-80UD MBTs), likely upgrades of existing vehicles and infrastructure work at HIT. Pakistan may also consider the KMDB’s new 6TD-3 diesel engine for use on the recently disclosed al-Khalid 2 MBT, which is to use a 1,500-hp powerplant.

It is not clear if Pakistan is interested in extending this collaboration to an off-the-shelf tank such as the Oplot-M. However, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence stated that during IDEAS, it did discuss the prospect of jointly manufacturing tanks with Pakistan. This is likely in reference to the Oplot-M.

The 51-ton Oplot-M is the latest development of the T-80, Ukraine’s mainstay MBT platform. The Oplot-M uses a new welded turret and multi-layered armour. It also benefits from an updated onboard electronics suite (e.g. fire control system) and passive as well as an active protection system for defensibility against incoming projectiles. The Oplot-M is armed with a 125-mm smoothbore gun capable of firing armour-piercing, high-explosive, and fragmentation rounds, and anti-tank guided missiles. Although it is powered by a variant of the 1,200-hp 6TD-2, there is the option of having it use the 1,500-hp 6TD-3.

For Pakistan, there are three main considerations.

First, the reality of Ukraine’s geostrategic situation vis-à-vis Russia, which will place uncertainty in terms of the Ukrainian industry’s ability to commit to schedules and contractual commitments.

Pakistan’s uncertain financial long-term condition, which is the second main issue, will have Rawalpindi and Islamabad approach procurements and industry collaboration with Kiev carefully. Uncertainty on both sides could either yield equitable exchanges or failure in actual negotiations.

Third, the technical considerations. In this respect, Ukraine has a strong case. The Oplot-M could share a high margin of commonality with the forthcoming al-Khalid 2, especially in terms of the powerplant. The procurement of the tank could also yield valuable work-share in relation to the 6TD diesel engine, which would be a valuable gain for the Pakistan Army in terms of localizing the supply chain of its armour. The Oplot-M could also be among the more affordable off-the-shelf tanks today.

Analysis: Terrexgate politics and defence collide

28th November 2016 - 8:33 by Gordon Arthur in Hong Kong

user posted image

Diplomatic telephone lines between Singapore and China were glowing red after nine Singapore Army Terrex 8x8 infantry carrier vehicles (ICV) were impounded in Hong Kong on 23 November.

Being carried aboard the commercial ship APL Qatar 041, nine vehicles and three containers holding ancillary equipment were en route from Kaohsiung in Taiwan to Singapore. They were confiscated for allegedly being undeclared military equipment.

What emerged is that the Chinese authorities were responsible for this act using the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department. The ship stopped in Xiamen in China on 21 November before reaching Hong Kong two days later.

QUOTE
Is Hong Kong Customs likely to allow access by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) or its affiliates to examine the Terrex vehicles? Customs did not respond to Shephard’s query on this issue, but this is clearly a fear since Singapore despatched a team to help secure the vehicles.

While the Terrex is a decade-old design, of far greater interest to China would be any digital battlefield management system (BMS) aboard the vehicles. MINDEF stated there was ‘no sensitive equipment on board’ the Terrex vehicles, although this is a denial one would expect.

The Terrex has international connections too. ST Kinetics entered the Terrex 3 (Sentinel II) in the Australian Army’s Land 400 Phase 2 competition, although it was not selected. Elsewhere, the Terrex 2 is a contender in the US Marine Corps ACV1.1 requirement.

For this reason alone, the Terrex and its underlying design philosophy should be of interest to Chinese engineers.

In a statement issued on 24 November, MINDEF said it expected ‘the shipment to return to Singapore expeditiously’. However, the fate of these nine vehicles is far from assured and will depend on negotiations with China’s Foreign Ministry.

‘Time for the Bundeswehr to grow again’: Germany announces 1st army expansion since Cold War

user posted image
German Defence minister Ursula van der Leyen meets with members of the Bundeswehr

Germany is marching towards rebuilding what was once western Europe’s largest army, with a “long overdue” decision to recruit 14,300 additional soldiers over the next seven years, to counter modern threats and overcome pressures “in all areas.”

“A quarter century of contraction is over. It is time for the Bundeswehr to grow again,” Ursula von der Leyen, the defense minister said in a statement announcing the expansion. “The Bundeswehr is under pressure to modernize in all areas. We have to get away from the process of permanent shrinking.”

Around 7,000 new troops will be recruited in the initial drive, with some 4,400 civilian personnel working alongside them. The defense ministry has already announced that its budget will grow from the current €34.2 billion ($38.9bn) to €39.2 billion ($44.6bn) by 2020. The defence ministry released plans to recruit an additional 14,300 troops over the next seven years, to address the renewed confrontation with Moscow over Ukraine and bolster the fight against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The army association, the Bundeswehrverband, praised the move as a “180-degree turn,” but said von der Leyen faces a struggle in recruiting the requisite amount of specialists, particularly since conscription was abandoned in 2011.

Latest Indonesian terror cell uncovered has plans for December attacks, receives overseas funding

user posted image

JAKARTA - The latest Indonesian terror cell uncovered in Majalengka, West Java, had plans to strike during the December holiday season and had funding from abroad, police said.

"The Majalengka cell received funds from overseas, and the Indonesian police are working with Interpol to trace where from," said National police spokesman Inspector General Boy Rafli Amar at a media briefing on Wednesday (Nov 30).

He said the group had first hatched a plan to build a lab to make shabu-shabu, the local street name for crystal meth, or the synthetic drug methamphetamine, and sell the drugs to raise funds for their terror activities.

user posted image

"The plan somehow changed, and they went ahead with making bombs which they planned to use themselves or sell them to other terror networks that needed them," said General Boy.

So far, four members of the group based in Majalengka, a regency with a population of about 1.2 million in West Java, have been arrested. They are Rio Priatna Wibawa, 23; Saiful Bahri, 30; Bahrain Agam, 36; and Hendra Rizki, 24.

Rio is a farmer who lives in Majalengka. He was arrested on Nov 23 in his home.

Saiful Bahri and Bahrain Agam were nabbed during follow-up operations over the weekend in the provinces of Banten in Java, and Aceh in Sumatra, respectively.

Hendra was arrested in Tangerang, near Jakarta, but the police did not say when.

Their targets for attack included the country's Parliament complex, police headquarters, local television stations, as well as the Myanmar Embassy, in Jakarta.

The Straits Times understands that the Myanmar mission in the capital was targeted over Naypyidaw's alleged oppression of the Rohingya Muslim ethnic minority.

user posted image

The plot was thwarted by Detachment 88 (Densus 88), the elite counter-terrorism unit of the police, last Wednesday when they busted a bomb-making lab in Rio's home in Majalengka.

Besides tracing their funding, investigations are underway to establish how the cell managed to procure military-grade explosives such as TNT and RDX.

RDX is a component of C4, plastic explosives typically only used by armed forces. Quantities of the substance, large enough to cause twice the damage in the 2002 Bali bombings, were seized from Rio's home during the raid.

General Boy said the Majalengka cell bought materials that they used to make explosives off the Internet as well as a street-side stall selling chemicals in Pramuka, an area in Jakarta known for selling exotic pets and gardening materials.

user posted image

The four suspects are members of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah, an offshoot of the old Jemaah Islamiah terror network, that is linked to radical ideologue Aman Abdurrahman.

It was Aman's followers who mounted the Jan 14 terror attack in Jakarta. Four of the perpetrators were killed during the siege, and at least 17 others have been arrested and charged with supporting the terrorist operation.

So far, four other militants have been sentenced to between four and 10 years over the last one month for their involvement in the incident.

General Boy also gave an update on the attack on a church in East Kalimantan on Nov 13, which killed a young toddler.

He said seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident in Samarinda, including two teenagers aged 16 and 17.

The 16-year-old, identified by the initials GA, was a student from Pondok Pesantren Ibnu Mas’ud, a boarding school in Bogor which police said was also linked to Aman.

German Navy to Invest in Five New Corvettes

user posted image
Braunschweig-class Corvette Oldenburg

Germany has agreed to spend 1.5 billion euros to buy five more corvettes for the navy, and Die Welt newspaper quoted lawmakers as citing the need for greater security in the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean.

Die Welt said lawmakers planned to introduce the funding proposal in parliament in mid-November.

"To meet new security needs in the Baltic Sea, in the Mediterranean Sea, and globally, the coalition plans to buy five new corvettes for 1.5 billion euros for the German Navy," the paper quoted Social Democrat Johannes Kahrs and Christian Democrat Eckhard Rehberg as saying.

Die Welt said Germany's goal was to have two of the new ships enter service as early as 2019, with the remaining three to follow in 2023. The ships will be based on the current Braunschweig-class of corvettes.

Some additional military funding became available last week after the defense ministry informed lawmakers that another big navy project, a 4 billion euro procurement for new multi-role ships, would be delayed by six months.

Parents outraged as the Bundeswehr targets underaged teenagers for future recruitment

user posted image
A Jugendoffizier (Youth Officer) giving a lecture about the military in a German school

A German MP has expressed his anger after his 16-year-old daughter received a recruitment letter in the post from the German military. The Bundeswehr has been criticized in the past by the United Nations for advertising to people too young to join the army. "It is scandalous that under-aged people are being targeted," Özcan Mutlu told the "taz" newspaper. "In my opinion this is an unacceptable attempt at creating influence."

According to the paper, the brochure read, "You already know where you want to go? Then get on board as a fixed-term soldier! This is the best possible way to get qualified to engage in our society and for our security."

The letter was presented alongside photos of various roles played by Germany's armed forces, before offering a monthly salary of 837.30 euros ($886.90 USD) to begin basic training. "This letter is very clearly advertising for the Bundeswehr," said Mutlu. "But under-age young people need protection."

As the Green party MP found out when he submitted an official question to the German government, the brochure received by Mutlu's daughter was one of 1,033,043 dispatched in 2016.

Germany is in an odd position when it comes to Bundeswehr recruitment and advertising. While it is often seen as more sensitive than other countries to militarization in society (recruitment in US high schools rarely sparks such a political outcry), it also employs several thousand Jugendoffizier ("youth officers") who regularly give lectures and conduct forums in schools and colleges- something that is almost unique in European countries.

One of these is Lieutenant Moritz Brake, who regularly gives talks in schools in Cologne about current conflicts like Syria and Mali, and his own experiences as a blue helmet soldier for the UN. He explained that there are clear guidelines in such work. "What I do as youth officer is part of political education," he told DW.
