Houthis are Iranian backer Shia militants.

Their chants are also similar to Iranian chants but you don't hear much from Iran nowadays.

Saudi Arabia are the competing regional enemy of Iran. Also claimed to be a puppet/proxy of Israel and USA which is why for Houthis, Saudi Arabia is part of their greater struggle against Israel/USA.

Indonesia foils major terror plot; 2 nabbed

user posted image

Indonesian authorities have thwarted a terror plot, nabbing two militants who had military-grade explosives and skills to assemble bombs.

The police said yesterday that Saiful Bahri and Bahrain Agam were part of a local terror cell plotting to attack the Parliament building, police headquarters and television stations in Jakarta. The group, based in Majalengka, West Java, was also found to be in possession of TNT and RDX - a key element used in making powerful explosives such as C4, typically used by the military.

user posted image

"If we compare these to the Bali bombings... the Majalengka cell had explosives that would be more than twice as powerful," said the police spokesman, Colonel Rikwanto.

He was referring to the 2002 bombings in Bali by the old Jemaah Islamiah terrorist network, which killed more than 200 people.

Saiful, who uses the alias Abu Syifa, was nabbed yesterday in Serang, a town in Banten province near Jakarta, while Bahrain was arrested in Aceh province on Saturday.

Col Rikwanto said the explosives were seized in Majalengka last Wednesday, during the arrest of Rio Priatna Wibawa, another member of the terror cell. The cell is said to be linked to Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian fighting alongside the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

He said Saiful, Bahrain and Rio were all acting under the instructions of Bahrun and had planned to mount attacks in Jakarta.

io had confessed to planning to make bombs to attack foreign embassies, religious buildings and government complexes in the capital.

According to the police, Bahrain had raised seven million rupiah (S$742) to set up a bomb-making laboratory in Rio's home in Majalengka, where the TNT and RDX were seized.

Saiful, who is trained in mixing explosive chemicals for bombs, also helped set up the same lab.

"We nabbed them just before they finished making the bombs," Col Rikwanto told reporters.

The latest arrests come after at least three other militants were jailed between four and 10 years over the last one month for their involvement in the Jan 14 terror attack in Jakarta. ISIS had claimed responsibility for the brazen hit on the capital city, which led to the deaths of eight people, including the four perpetrators.

user posted image

The incident was also the first terror attack on Indonesian soil since the 2009 twin bombings at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels. Seven people died and 50 were injured, including a number of foreigners, in those attacks.

The police, in a separate operation on Saturday, also rounded up nine other militants loyal to ISIS.

Some of these suspects helped other Indonesians travel to Syria to join ISIS, while two of them participated in the Nov 4 protest targeted at Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, over blasphemy allegations.

China lodges protest with Singapore over troop carriers

user posted image

BEIJING: China's Foreign Ministry said on Monday (Nov 28) that it had lodged a protest with Singapore after the city-state's armoured troop carriers were seized by Hong Kong customs en route from Taiwan last Wednesday.

Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang made the comment at a regular press briefing.

user posted image

The Chinese government had said on Friday that it "consistently and resolutely opposes any form of official exchanges, including military exchanges and cooperation" with Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a breakaway province.

user posted image

A team from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) arrived in Hong Kong on Friday night to try and resolve the issue of its nine Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles (ICV) and associated equipment being delayed at the port. The team met with representatives of APL, the shipping contractor involved.

The containers which were opened for inspection have been resealed by Hong Kong customs and moved to a secured access-controlled area, said Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).

According to a report from by Hong Kong news agency Factwire, it was China's law enforcement officials who tipped off Hong Kong customs about the shipment of nine armoured vehicles.

Philippine police detonate suspicious package near US embassy

user posted image

MANILA: Philippine police detonated a suspicious package they thought could have been a home-made bomb found in a trash bin near the U.S. embassy in Manila on Monday, the police chief in the capital said.

There was no damage from the controlled detonation, Senior Superintendent Joel Coronel said, although the incident created a traffic jam in the area.

user posted image

Business at the embassy continued as normal, with dozens of Filipinos queuing outside for visa applications. There was no immediate comment about the incident from embassy officials.

Coronel said police received a call before 7 a.m. local time (2300 GMT Sunday) from a street sweeper who found an old mobile phone with black and red electrical wires connected to a package. It was thought the package could have been a bomb.

user posted image

"There is no danger, there is no cause for alarm," Coronel told reporters. He said there were no explosives, such as gunpowder, in the package.

"The blast you heard was caused by ... a controlled detonation. We are trying to identify who left the package at the trash bin," he said.

However, a police intelligence official, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said the mobile phone was connected to an 81 mm mortar shell.

"We are still making further investigations to check if the ordnance is live," the intelligence official told Reuters.

He said Islamist militants in central Mindanao, a restive southern province, were known to use such shells to make bombs, similar to one that exploded in Davao City in September.

8 Indonesians jailed for tanker hijack in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight Indonesians were sentenced to between 15 and 18 years in prison by a Malaysian court for the hijacking of an oil tanker last year, an official said Monday (Nov 28).

The tanker MT Orkim Harmony was carrying around 6,000 tonnes of petrol worth an estimated US$5.6 million when it was commandeered by the eight men on Jun 11 last year.

The tanker was en route from Malaysia's western coast to the port of Kuantan on the east coast.

Six of the pirates were sentenced to 15 years in jail and five strokes of the cane, while the other two were handed 18-year jail sentences, a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency official told AFP.

He said that the Indonesians pleaded guilty after they were charged on Sunday in the southern state of Johor, neighbouring Singapore.

Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau's Kuala Lumpur-based Piracy Reporting Center, said the shipping community hailed the punishment.

"We welcome the tough punishment. It will send a strong signal to potential pirates that crime does not pay," he told AFP.

The eight suspects had eluded security forces by escaping from the tanker on a lifeboat under cover of darkness, Malaysian authorities said at the time, after warships were scrambled to hunt down the men.

The tanker's 22 crew members were mostly unscathed except for an Indonesian sailor who was treated for a gunshot wound to the thigh.

The hijackers subsequently washed up on Vietnam's southwestern Tho Chu island on a lifeboat claiming to have had an accident at sea about a week after the hijack.

But they were taken into custody after local officials discovered they were carrying large sums of cash, and were accused of hijacking the MT Orkim Harmony oil tanker.

The Indonesians pirates were extradited to Malaysia early Sunday after being held by Vietnamese authorities for almost 18 months.

China is Testing a New Very Long Range Air to Air Missile

user posted image

The J-16 carries two VLRAAM for a test firing. The VLRAAM is one of the world's largest air to air missiles. Its other advanced features include an AESA radar, a infrared/electro-optical seeker (under the yellow-orange cover on the forward section above the nosecone), and satellite navigation midcourse correction. (all photos : cjbdy)

China is Testing a New Very Long Range Air to Air Missile that could Thwart U.S. Plans for Air Warfare

In November 2016, a Chinese J-16 strike fighter test-fired a gigantic hypersonic missile, successfully destroying the target drone at a very long range.

Looking at takeoff photos, we estimate the missile is about 28 percent of the length of the J-16, which measures 22 meters (about 72 feet). The puts the missile at about 19 feet (5.8 m), and roughly 13 inches (33 cm) in diameter. The missile appears to have four tailfins. Reports are that the size would put into the category of a very long range air to air missile (VLRAAM) with ranges exceeding 300 km (roughly 186 miles), likely max out between 250 and 310 miles. (As a point of comparison, the smaller 13.8-foot, 15-inch-diameter Russian R-37 missile has a 249-mile range).

This is a big deal: this missile would easily outrange any American (or other NATO) air-to-air missile. Additionally, the VLRAAM's powerful rocket engine will push it to Mach 6 speeds, which will increase the no escape zone (NEZ), that is the area where a target cannot outrun the missile, against even supersonic targets like stealth fighters.

user posted image

The new, larger missile's added value is not just in range. Another key feature: its large active electronically scanned (AESA) radar, which is used in the terminal phase of flight to lock onto the target. The AESA radar's large size—about 300-400% larger than that of most long range air-to-air missiles—and digital adaptability makes it highly effective against distant and stealthy targets, and resilient against electronic countermeasures like jamming and spoofing.

The VLRAAM's backup sensor is a infrared/electro-optical seeker that can identify and hone in on high-value targets like aerial tankers and airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) radar aircraft. The VLRAAM also uses lateral thrusters built into the rear for improving its terminal phase maneuverability when engaging agile targets like fighters.

Interestingly, the ability to glide may be a key feature as well. A 2016 research paper by Zhang Hongyuan, Zheng Yuejing, and Shi Xiaorong of Beijing Institute of Control and Electronics Technology linked to the VLRAAM development suggests that the midcourse portion of the VLRAAM's flight will occur at altitudes above 30 km (about 18.6 miles). Flying at such low pressure, low drag high altitudes would allow the VLRAAM to extend its range (similar to hypersonic gliders). The high altitude also makes it difficult for enemy aircraft and air defenses to shoot it down midflight. Finally, high altitude flight means that the VLRAAM would have a high angle of attack against lower flying targets, which reduces the response time for enemy evasive action.

user posted image

Another researched VLRAAM function is datalinking; the papers called for the VLRAAM to be embedded within a highly integrated combat networks. It is envisioned as just part of a larger wave of networked solutions aggregated through multiple Chinese systems. For example, a J-20 stealth fighter wouldn't mount the missile (the VLRAAM is too large to fit in the J-20's weapons bay), but could use its low observable features to fly relatively close in order to detect enemy assets like AEW&C aircraft (which are vital to gather battlespace data for manned and unmanned assets, but subsonic in speed and less able to evade missiles). Then before breaking off contact, the J-20 would signal a J-16 400 km (249 miles) away (outside the range of most air to air missiles) providing it the data needed to launch the VLRAAM at the target. This would offer China a longer range version of present U.S. tactics that involve using the fifth generation F-22 as a sensor for 4th generation fighters as the "shooters."

The gains in range and speed of the VLRAAM pose another significant risk to the concepts of the U.S. military's "Third Offset." U.S. operations are highly dependent on assets like aerial tankers, dedicated electronic warfare aircraft, and AEW&C. For example, without aerial tankers, the relatively short range of the F-35s would become even more of a liability in long range operations in the South China Seas and Taiwan Straits. Similarly, without AEW&C aircraft, F-22s would have to use onboard radars more, raising their risk of detection. Even for stealthy tanker platforms like the planned MQ-25 Stingray drone and proposed KC-Z tanker will be vulnerable to VLRAAMs if detected by emerging dedicated anti-stealth systems such as the Divine Eagle drone and Yuanmeng airship.

By pushing the Chinese air defense threat bubble hundreds of miles out further, they also offer to turn the long range tables on the putative U.S. "Arsenal" Plane concept, a Pentagon plan to launch missiles from non-stealthy planes from afar. In sum, VLRAAM is not just a big missile, but a potential big deal for the future of air warfare.

Navy’s second SSV, BRP Davao Del Sur now 91% completed

November 27, 2016 PNA

The Philippine Navy (PN)’s second strategic sealift vessel, the BRP Davao Del Sur (LD-602), is now 91 percent complete and well in line to meet her May 2017 delivery date. This was disclosed by PN spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna in an interview with the Philippine News Agency in an interview Sunday.

At the moment, PT PAL (Persero) shipbuilders in Surabaya, Indonesia are now installing navigational, deck and engineering equipment on the PN’s second SSV.

“Ongoing installation of navigational, deck, engineering equipment. I don’t know the exact percentage of completion but for sure she will be (home in the Philippines) by May 2017,” he added.

The BRP Davao Del Sur (LD-602) was launched last Sept. 29. She is the sister ship of the BRP Tarlac (LD-601), currently the largest Filipino warship in commissioned.

BRP Tarlac was commissioned during short ceremonies at Pier 13, Manila South Harbor last June 1.

She arrived in the Philippines last May 14 after a five-day journey from PT PAL shipyard in Surabaya which started on May 9.

BRP Davao Del Sur is also a Makassar-class landing platform dock like her sister ship BRP Tarlac.

Its delivery to the Philippines, is tentatively scheduled on the midpart of 2017, will complete the two-unit SSV procurement project with an approved budget contract of PHP4 billion sourced from the AFP Modernization Act Trust Fund.

Just like the BRP Tarlac, the PN’s latest SSV will serve as a floating command-and-control ship especially in the conduct of humanitarian assistance and disaster response and will also serve as a military sealift and transport vessel.

ASIA Former Indonesian Beauty Queen Wants to Quit the U.S. Army Because She Literally Can’t Even

user posted image

A former Indonesian beauty queen who chose to serve in the U.S. military last year has announced that she no longer likes it and is now planning to quit and move back to Indonesia.

Kristania Virginia Besouw, Miss Indonesia 2006, surprised her fans in March last year after she posted a photo on social media of herself dressed in army uniform along with other trainees. Just a little over a year, she is now saying she wishes to leave the military soon and return to her hometown of Manado, North Sulawesi.

“I don’t like it, [I] want to resign,” Besouw said in an interview with kompas.com (via the Jakarta Post). “[It’s] tiring to always travel and move. What’s important is I already know how it feels to be a soldier.”

Besouw said she was earlier poised to get promoted to a higher rank. “I was sent to the Noncommissioned Officer Academy to study a basic leader course for a month in September, which allows me to achieve a higher rank,” she said.

After a change of heart, she decided to instead leave the military immediately after her contract expires in October 2018.

“I’ve graduated from it; all I need to do is just meet with the council.”

A native of Manado, the capital city of the North Sulawesi province, Kristania explained that she has longed to visit her family and friends back at home.

“I long to see Manado; I want to eat Manado’s spicy, delicious foods. I also miss my close friends and family,” she said.

After her victory in the Miss Indonesia pageant in 2006, she later represented the country at the Miss World contest in the same year. In 2008, Besouw married a medical doctor who graduated from the Philippines. Following her marriage, Besouw moved to Colby, Kansas, and then got her U.S. citizenship after passing the MAVNI (Military Accessions Vital to National Interest) program for those who study in the U.S. for at least 2 years. She is currently on active duty in Killeen, Texas at the Fort Hood army base as a nurse.

Where got.

8 years is service obligation, but active duty periods vary. Some only serve actively for 2 years only, especially those who go to active combat. The rest of that period you will be put into the Inactive Reserves. The military still have your name on register and can theoretically call you back anytime, but this rarely actually happens.
