lemme give u an analogy to how expensive it is to carry out refit of subs.
i'm working for a small harbour tug company. normally, our 30m, 3000 hp - 4000 hp tugs will go to dock for refit, overhaul and deep maintenance every 5 years. lucky that it's a tug with no long propeller shaft - thus can do docking every 5 years.
for vessels with long propeller shaft, they MUST carry out docking every 2.5 years MAX - take out propeller, tail shaft, overhaul main engines, generators bla bla bla.
on my part, my budget can easily go between RM2 mil to RM2.5 mil per vessel every 5 years. our spare parts are commercially available off the shelf items. our tugs are single hull - no pressure hull whatsoever. subs has at 2 hulls, outer and pressure hull. 6 layers of paint that can last for 60 months, no anechoic coating - i don't know how many anechoic coats does a sub have.
to carry out major overhaul on a main engine + spares costs my company easily north of RM150k, and 1 have 2 engines. damn!!
now, bring that to a sub...
outer hull need to remove anechoic coating, reapply new one. lucky if no steel renewal works. pressure hull need to be inspected inch by inch. my tugs doesn't need that.
steel need to degausse, navigation instrument needs to remove, calibrate, renew if necessary, put back in the sub. engines need to overhaul - damn u mirrlees blackstone! engine mounts need to change, pipings need to change. @LTZ, u all use #40 or #80 for sea water pipes?
combat information system need to upgrade - not COTS items.

kapal x belayar, condemn y kapal tied up alongside, kapal belayar kondem y belayar so much save la a bit running hours for actual stuff, save a bit bajet.

i'd be glad if i can get the figures too. at least smart spending, not spending buta2 like there's no limit to ur bajet.

i am very much aware of that. but this guy was saying the China copied the trimaran design from somebody else. no one holds the patent from trimaran ships. it's not about copying, rather the trend of naval vessel designs

from outside bole sama. any naval architect worth their money can design a ship, be it monohull, cat or trimaran. any shipyard with enough expertise can build them. any ship can appear the same externally.
shipbuilding isn't like aircraft manufacturing anyway...
