What's wataniah?
*
Territorial Army unit for Malaysian Army.

Reservists who sign up will have basic training for 3 months, after that spend 1 weekend each month for training with annual military exercises every year. Period of service contract is 5 years.

Preferable by many coz service term contract is short and terms of service not so strict like regular army units. Total have around 40,000 reservists.

Compensation wise?
*
Not so much. Around RM100 per weekend for enlisted men and RM 170 for officers. That means a month la, since training is one weekend per month.

But each year got one-month long exercises have different allowance, cannot remember how much.

RM 100 for enlisted is quite high leh...

The monthly salary of new enlisted soldiers only RM1K+
*
That why I said more preferable. Minimal military lifestyle and hardship, yet the allowance is decent and the experience is probably priceless. thumbsup.gif

They also have their own paratrooper/airborne unit, 501th Para regiment, if u are of the more adventurous types.

Do you know the allowance for airborne?

In SAF, our commando bonus is an additional SGD$500 per month.
*
Honestly, dunno. Although like all airborne troops there is obviously have special bouns, flight pay and jump pay, but I'm not sure how much.

Askar Wataniah used to have full-time units (the 300 series regiments), but now they were disbanded and reorganized into the Border Regiments.

Also, you could probably add up the PDRM paramilitary units into the overall Malaysian defensive structure. They have quite substantial number (around +60,000) but they are more for specialized COIN-type operations instead of conventional warfare. For example, during the recent Lahad Datu operations, it was the PDRM paramilitary units that spearheaded the operations, not the Army.

During training or after enlistment? if after enlistment cannot, your obligation contract period is 5 years. If u don't attend monthly training u can be found as AWOL or even charged as a deserter and be court-martialed.

weekend attendance also some pipul cannot follow?
better dun enlist like that lor..  sweat.gif  sweat.gif
*
Just 1 weekend (2 days) a month some more, plus 30 days for annual exercise. So if by some miracle u survived the 30-day Wataniah basic training, your military life only amounts to around 50+ days a year.

If like that oso cannot, confirm the military lifestyle not for you la. laugh.gif

it should be over quite soon..  Mosul fight almost over..

Not necessarily. If nothing else this only ends IS's proto-state experiment. Even if the caliphate collapses, IS will only revert to what they were before : a richly funded stateless terror group. They still have the money, resources, supporters and fanatical adherents to keep going for a looongg time.

That's a whole new ball game. As the footsoldiers disperse back to their own countries or into exile they'll take their doctrines with them and spread them even further. At least in syria and iraq they were going nowhere.

hmm I read on the investigative journalism review that Isis is running out of cash.. Seems that a number of their fighters are not paid .. Yup you are right the real danger are the ones returning from Syria / Iran. Unless they decide to join the Yemeni rebels .
*
That is true, but they need a lot of money mostly to maintain the civil service and bureaucracy of the caliphate. For small scale insugency they don't need as much. Plus most 'lone wolf' attacks overseas do so under invidual initiative and cost.

Even al-qaeda with smaller funding, more conservative doctrine and less military expertise can still be a major problem, if IS with their still large funding, aggressive philosophy, fanatical followers and far more military expertise change their strategy to disband the caliphate and disperse underground, they'll be far more dangerous.

malaysia dont need NS,whether the current 'summercamp' type of NS or fullfledge NS...we have enough able-bodied people who want to join the military...in every intake, the number of applicants is more than the available places...

just strengthen the wataniah
*
Agreed. I believe RAW numbers should at least be at par with regular units.

Also, is it really that advantageous to have long service terms, up to 20+ years? IMHO ATM should reduce fixed service terms to around 10 years, but at the same time make easier to extend service contract. I think that period is enough to train and professionalize the enlisted men and junior officers, but still can keep the military age average down (war is a young man's game) and at the same time, keep the really old-timer professional hands if you need them. These types of people will usually re-enlist when they can anyway.
