is there a huge player base for this game?

not really.
i see my friends list playing, its even lesser than BF hardline...and we all know how bad that was.

sure theres still a group, but as a community i think BF here is as good as dead.

I wonder though, is it up to EA?

Why don't you try to appeal the SEA hosters for BF3/4?
*
of cos its EA.
they dont want source code being leaked, thats why BF2 time u couldnt really rent servers...and only a few trusted GSP aka game service providers thats trusted by EA.
BF3 and BF4 then got 3rd party providers...but it got really out of control with alot not following EA t&c.
so now EA go back to BF2 days again...

of cos limiting source code also was another consideration in making hacking harder, but that one we all know is completely useless.

so those statistics mostly from?

what u mean from? of cos they can see what ur connecting from.
anyway even BF4 overall sales figures which includes ps3 and xbox shows that PC only made up 10% of total sales.

i still think eventually its EA's master plan to do cross platform play...hence they want to limit servers to only those they can control.
