Hi all
My current rig has Windows 10 (upgraded from Windows 8 OEM) running. As I am toying with the idea of changing the CPU from i5 to i7, will this cause me to have to "re-activate" my windows license? Mobo remains the same.
If yes, can I re-use my existing Windows 8 OEM key?
If I cannot re-use my existing Windows 8 OEM key, I don't mind getting another Windows 10 license (Retail this time). Would I need to reinstall or I just need to enter the new license key?
Appreciate your inputs/advise on this.

by theory...the license is tied with mobo...changing CPU should not affect anything...only 2 scenarios is possible for the re-installation, change mobo & change main disk drive...lets wait for another opinion.. :-)

your license is tied to your motherboard, not your CPU.. so, you should be fine.

When you upgrade hardware that causes windows needing to reactivate, you do not not need to reenter the product key again.
If you cannot activate windows you can start Run and type in SLUI 3. This will start windows activation. Key in your product key and activate. If cannot activate you can hoose to activate manually and call microsoft to get activation code.
Your current Windows 7,8,8.1 key CAN BE USED TO REINSTALL WINDOWS 10. This one 100% confirm as i have done it many times already.
Requirement for this is THAT THE PC HAS UPGRADED WINDOWS 10 AT LEAST ONCE from old windows version.

Windows key are a big messed up(especially for the free upgrade) buy a new one. Well this was sort of response I received from microsoft support (Malaysia) which made me mad and go pirate all the way and/or buy cheap key online. Dont blame me, blame microsoft.

A lot more cheaper than retail license box. This post has been edited by MaUi^: Nov 29 2016, 03:11 PM

I'm planning upgrade my mainboard. I successfully upgraded from win7 home retail to win 10 home.
Managed to do a fresh install as well. If I were to change the board without doing a fresh installation, would it still prompt me to activate windows ?

From what I have managed to gather thus far, changing mobo will result in an activation prompt.

Note sure if you still need this because this thread is quite old, If you have the Windows 10’s Anniversary Update, you can associate you license with your MS account, so you can just login to your MS account to reactivate your license after a hardware change. Here's how: http://www.howtogeek.com/226510/how-to-use...0%99s-hardware/P.S: I know this works on retail license but I'm not too sure about OEM's.
