Hi there.. On Speedfan (4.52), there's 2 fans in the list.. which I assume Fan 2 should be the CPU Fan. But what about the Fan 1? 100+ RPM? CPU's really hot even on idle... Just got the graphic chip replaced last week... not sure if the fan's dusty or not (the shop MUST HAVE cleaned the fan when they took the part apart... right?) Can hear the whir even when it's idle... Attached thumbnail(s)

HP Compaq CQ42 (its a notebook)
Please do take note that not all technician will service the fan when they took it out nor refreshing the thermal compound.
If you can hear the fan's sound spinning when your computer is idling then there are a few factors you must consider :-
- Is there any background apps running ? - Is there any startup apps running ? - Is there a screen saver configured ? - Is your power options configured correctly ? - Is your BIOS updated ? etc. ...........
Now I also happens to own a CQ42 model with discrete graphics (AMD... duh...) and I did encounter where the fan spinning is relatively fast thus creating whirring sound.
I put a CoolerMaster notebook fans under the laptop, it does somehow slow down the fan. I'm suspecting that either the CPU's thermal compound has expired or there is dust accumulating on the fan itself.
Try to refresh the thermal compound first & while doing it, clean the fan also.

Update Turns out that, before, there's actually some process running on the background... some.. "windows trusted installer module platform..." (or something... The fan doesn't spins that loud right now... And the temp hover around 50-65C.. I'll probably still clean the fan in near future if it keeps spinning loudly... I've left the laptop for 2 years+ before sending it to repair (the graphic chip) Probably gonna apply new thermal compound... Thanks again
