"A Final Fantasy TCG?? Sounds like another Square Enix quick gil-grab!"
I wouldn't be surprised if this was your initial thought upon reading the title; quite reasonably so considering SE's merchandising habits of milking the FF brand and not hearing about this TCG before. So here's a little background:
Released by Square Enix and Hobby Japan on February 2011 , FFTCG is a TCG whereby players build decks and battle each other with cards featuring characters from the Final Fantasy series. FFTCG remained exclusive to the Japanese for almost 6 years, during which its has received 15 expansions and sold over 3.5 million boosters packs with over 2000 different card designs. Apparently Japan also hosted national tournaments every year. But no longer, as Square Enix will finally release the TCG in US and Europe on October 28th this year. The initial release set called Opus I will feature 216 cards, accompanied by 3 different entry decks themed around Final Fantasy VII, X and XIII.
The gameplay itself has been described as fast and versatile and has been compared with Magic the gathering for a similar resource system, though this is likely due to the background of the creator, Taro Kageyama, who was a former TCG champion. The following video is a short beginner tutorial about the game itself.
So why'd I make this post again? To spread awareness about the game (for some reason close to no one even knows about it) and gauge interest for this TCG among Malaysians. Perhaps if card shops see there's sufficient demand for this game they will pick it up. Oh and because I REALLY WANNA PLAY THIS GAME
