* May 1999: Audrey Melissa Batinathan, 17, a Form 5 student of Methodist Girls School in Kuala Lumpur, was raped and murdered near a Tenaga Nasional sub-station in Jalan Kinabalu on her way to school. A post-mortem revealed that she was battered on the head, raped and strangled. The murderer has yet to be arrested although police has released a photofit of the suspect identified as a 30-something curly haired dadah addict named Chris.
In July 2001, Audrey’s mother Margaret Francis received an undisclosed amount of money from the Government in an out-of-court settlement related to a negligence suit brought by Francis against the headmistress of Audrey’s school and the Government. She claimed both parties had an obligation and responsibility towards Audrey’s safety and that her death was due to the defendants’ negligence.
