Yup.. it's finally out.. I was lurking in the forum looking for someone to post on this but seems like no one posted yet. So let's just start one. Can delete if there's one similar.

Shipment will start on 15th October 2016. Will be in stores by next month. I believe this MAVIC will be the next big thing since Phantom came out years ago.

Is there any Malaysian vlogger or youtuber that manage to get a hand on this? Could be interesting to find out how the MAVIC flies here.

Main point:
The first high quality imaging smart drone that you can bring along for travel without carrying extra luggage.

High quality imaging - capable to take good picture and video.
Smart drone - active tracking, follow-me, smart cinematic camera movement (dolly, crane), one-man operator camera
Easy on luggage - foldable, small in size

Things to consider:
Smaller in size, means lighter in weight - will probably face some issues handling wind. Reviews showed that MAVIC handles that quite well.
Foldable means we're exposed to another mechanical part that may fail due to wear. Loose or too tight..

Running in new batteries recommendation:

For the first 5 cycles. Fly to 40% and recharge.
For the next 5 cycles. Fly to 30% and recharge - treat this as a gentle run in period for your batteries.
After the Initial 10 cycles fly to 20% and charge.

For long term use and Maximising the life of your Mavic's batteries.

I would recommend setting low voltage alarm at 30% and always aim to land at 20%.

Avoid flying to below 10% during normal usage.

I keep 'racun'ing myself... there's more vids available on youtube now. the quality of vid seems comparable to phantom 4.

and browsing dji forum, those who got it keep repeating how solid it was built on.

casey neistat's early vlog showed some out of focus vid from mavic. however he made a statement two days back, he didn't know there's manual focus on the mavic. tap to focus (TTF) as said by DJI.

basic tutorial for mavic is already out on youtube.

Heard mavic got problem with the focus and follow me feature if you walk downhill. Not gonna buy into the hype and wait few more months for sales

There is no problem with focus la. Just that most people didn't know about tapping to focus...

Never heard of the problem on follow me while going downhill though. I've seen the video of Mavic following a bicycle on a slightly sloping downhill and there wasn't any problem though.

If you look for the DJI Mavic Pro on 11street, you can find one of the more aggressive pre-order pricing offered by TMT Online (Thundermatch). I've checked the DJI website, they (Thundermatch) seem to be listed as an authorized reseller.

Try looking for some of the 11street discount/coupons, should be able to lower by another RM30 or so.
Couple that with credit card (no additional transaction fee).
And lastly, they also have zero-interest installment via selected banks.

And regarding the tap to focus, apparently you need to set the focus each time you fly, currently you can't lock it at infinity

Granted, they're not dealbreakers, but I'd rather they hammer out all the minor problems first before i think about spending that much for a drone

Cheapest would be to buy in Shenzhen or HK?

Not sure about pricing... However, you may have a problem with warranty..
If anything happens, you'll need to send (or travel) back to Shenzhen/HK to warranty the drone.

As far as I know, DJI does not have a service ctr in M'sia. So your DJI will still be sent back to Shenzhen for repairs anyway. So I am not sure what's the diff? Do correct me if I am wrong, though.

dji needs to fix that. Ppl may forget to set the focus and end up with blurry video unknowingly, it's kinda counter intuitive

It's still the best compact drone on the market currently, maybe get it when it's on sales

I prefer GoPro karma. It more suit my outdoor activity.

And won't stuck with 1 camera if the quality is bad.

But, but... the size



It's just kind of a shame they haven't made drone batteries that can be charged with usb, that'll be really killer cos I can bring it on camping trips

Let say I go and hike a mountain. I plan to record my journey and area video too.

If I use mavic, I got to carry more stuff. Another camera, battery, stand etc.

If I use karma, I just use 1 camera. And even best with the gimpal together. It is like 1 package.

I think the charging current is high for shorten time. Usb can't handle.

Gopro Karma is more suitable for people who is for sports with the include handheld gimbal. DJI Mavic Pro is still videographer oriented but with a leap to sports.

This is a good review and will probably answer some questions for people who already has a p4 and are thinking of switching to mavic. Biggest point I think is that mavic has lower performance in lowlight compared to p4

Video quality look bad for mavic. Even daylight.

Soft and over saturated color.

the low light capabilities blows my mind. this might be my first drone

Mavic has a flat color profile (similar to sony's s-log), which is useful for postprocessing

Did you see the night time comparison? Very clearly the Mavic has a much better sensor. Also, are you using a calibrated monitor?

P4 footage is internally sharpened while Mavic's is not. Again, depending on your usage but most videographer/cinematographer will prefer unsharpened footage to process it themselves.
Mavic is few stops better than P4 meaning Mavic has better ISO performance.

It doesn't look like been sharpen by software. More like lens quality. Or the sensor.

Another I don't understand about dji. Why they want to use mavic to kill the phantom series? If mavic every expect better than phantom, they shot their own foot?

Neither the P4 nor Mavic shoot RAW video, only RAW photo. There's a few misleading video on YouTube calling original unedited footage RAW, example below. RAW video capable cameras are very expensive. The DJI Inspire 1 with Zenmuse X5R 4K RAW capable camera costs AU$9299 which is close to RM30000 or more.


Both the P4 and Mavic can shoot in D-log which allow really flat colour tone for ease of grading/editing. Here's a video demonstrating post sharpened Mavic footage compared to P4 and Inspire 1 (start watching at 2:26):


To address your third question, I believe the Mavic is a bullet aimed at GoPro Karma. P4 sales could've dropped, Karma got announced so DJI figure its a pretty good time to roll out their Mavic. I also believe that Mavic has been ready for quite some time but DJI waited for GoPro's move. The leak for Mavic actually came a day after Karma's announcement.

I'm not here to diss anyone. The GoPro Karma is a great product paired with a Hero 5 Black but it has its own advantage/disadvantage when it comes to video capability. The Hero 5 can shoot rectilinear (non fish eye) wide angle but only in 2.7K mode in a narrower field of view, not 4K. This is not advertised and can be a hassle to videographer/cinematographer. On the other hand, with all the accessories that are readily available, it also make video/film making easy. So it really boils down to use case.

If you goto DJI's website, the price changes according to country (geo-location) and currency. Cheapest place to buy is still the US. More expensive in Oz.

In fact, the 11street.my promo make it cheaper to buy in Malaysia compared to Oz. Unless you're able to get an eBay promo and claim GST back when you leave Oz under the TRS scheme.

nope. tax already included in final price. so the final price on the DJI Store is usually slightly higher than the advertised price.

buy direct from DJI Store is cheaper. but from comparisons made, best is still 11street. Cheapest at the moment.

20 minutes flight time might not be enough if you're out and about.. battery time also needed for calibration and test flights.

anyhow, for expert drone operator, 20 minutes is already a lot of time. huhu..

Still can buy the combo after the pre-order period right? Like some of you had said, better wait for more in depth reviews before getting one. The 64GB free SD card isn't that great anyway.

There's new DJI concept store just open at paradigm, might drop by to check it out

Most people preorder cos they want it early. But judging from the responses in the official forums, dji can't even give a proper ETA and seemingly can't promise anything atm

dji has a very bad track record in product launches and some of the worst customer service ever. Their products are not problem free out of the gate, and may take weeks to months for them to fix it

So yeah, it's better to just wait until the dust settles, then grab it when it's on sales

Karma is being delayed to 2017, but I suspect gopro is going back to the drawing board. If gopro can come up with a design which is as compact as the mavic, I'm sold already

While mavic is a great drone on its own, but karma is a great overall package I would say, that you can take off the gimbal and camera for other kinds of activities

No matter how you do .....there will always be a good pilot who would teach the world about drone and bad pilot who love to see the world of drone burn

I'm contemplating which drone to go for, Mavic or Karma??

If you're looking for a drone only, go for mavic
If overall package (action cam + gimbal + drone) is what you're looking for, go for karma

Day by day the poison is getting stronger and stronger lah..

Mavic delay 1 month. Karma delay till 2017.

FYI, there is no way to manually switch to atti mode in Mavic.
Instead, Mavic will auto switch to atti mode when gps/glonass/vps signal is weak/not working.

Some users might find this annoying as they use atti mode to shoot smoother video.

I think delay 1 month for first batch only, for later batches could take longer. This is for average joe who preordered direct from dji website
Heard some retailers are getting it as early as beginning of november, so best course of action to get it early is to cancel direct preorder and look around for reseller who already has it in stock

Better to wait until all problems/counterintuitive enhancements are fixed. This is a brand new drone for dji, there's bound to be lots of problems out of the gate
